we used to have the biggest one on the coast here unil they sold it off to some other country.

it was about 1000 ft long.  it held the exxon valdez but they had to put a barge under the bow because it hung out the end.

I used to get up every morning and go to work on one of those things.

I saw my first ones a couple months ago in San Diego.  A smaller one like that and a big one that had a container ship in it.  I was impressed...

If that was indeed at Norfolk, you might want to be careful taking pictures in and around the industrial areas.  At Pearl photography is strictly prohibited without consent of the proper channels.

I saw a bunch of these floating dry docks when I was stationed in Norfolk NOB.   They were all at the southern end where the bubble-heads were moored.  We could take all the pictures we wanted to.  Here's one of NSC Norfolk I took pulling into port in 1987.

That's cool then, I guess each yard has some differing rules here
and there.  Thanks Diablo.

They are probably afraid that some country might bomb Pearl Harbor if someone takes pictures of the ship yards.  Nah, that would never happen.  Radar would pick up any incomming flights long before they reached the harbor....
