Toad.. got any pics of your bro's AT-6?
« on: March 07, 2003, 09:31:34 PM »
I've just aquired a brand new Byron AT-6 (101", 28lbs) already painted in Reno Race colors and gaudied up with a graphic motiff.

I'm thinking of re-painting after i've finished and flight tested it, and i'm eyeballing Texan and SNJ schemes.

whats yours look like?

It's a Vultee BT-13 Hang.

But yeah, I do have a pic.

damn.. thats right.. a vibrator!! i did see a shot of it last spring.. in the hangers wasn't it??

put up some pics.. and lets see yer Fairchild again. damn thats a freakin pretty plane.

Gyro, Iorn Bay bought out the byron designs and some tooling. I don't know if IB has offered a re-release of their classic AT-6. When the 1/5 scale AT-6 reno racing got hot the Byron dominated. That's the era this old bird comes from (late 80's).

This one was the owners 'second'.. it's a duplicate of the plane he was gonna campaign, and it's set up with a race tuned G-62 Zenoah, but the rig was never completed. Has the engine in, but never saw radio or air/fuel system installations. The guy augered the prime on his first turn in the first race and gave racing up. not long after, heath problems forced him to hang up the box. long story short, I wound up with the dust covered behomoth.

can't believe my luck.. tho the era of the byron being competitive on the race circuit is long over, it was always the soul of one hell of nice scale warbird. this one is set up with the robart retracts w/ scale gear doors, detailed cockpit, tuned exhaust, scale hinging, split flap, panel lines... with the race tuned g-62 it'll be some awsome.

And.. never having seen radio gear or plumbing, it'll be a cakewalk to set it up with the best in modern on board gear without reworking a 15 year old outdated radio room. I'll get some pics up sunday when i get my digital camera back.

damn, feels good to be thinking about ailerons and elevators again. ;)

Damn, I had the feeling Byron was gone. Tried looking for their web site a few times in the past. I wonder if my Pipe Dream would be a collector item now? Ohhh well.

Hangtime i have a proposition for you.

This past summer during september, i lost a very close friend named Bob Beckman in a crash during an airshow performance in Circleville, OH.  He flew an AT-6 in formation performing stunts with 3 other aircraft (all AT-6 & SNJ's) in a flight of 4 making coordinated loops and performing mock dogfights.

If i provide you with a photo for the paint scheme (Luke Field gunnery school markings with authentic numbering) could you send me back a high-res photo (or color negative on 100 speed film) with the new scheme of your model, should you choose to use it, and i can superimpose his name on the side of the cockpit with a photo editor.  The end result poster would be displayed in  the hangar of the Historical Aircraft Squadron based at Fairfield Co. Airport in Lancaster, OH.  I'd love to make a poster of some sort of memorial to Bob, to hang in the hangar where we restore warbirds.  Currently we are working on an A-26 Invader.  This is a photo of the formation of T-6's and SNJ's, Bob is flying lead.
