Something like it's elder brother-
Wing tips rounded, spinner's bigger.
Unbraced tailplane ends it's figure.
One-O-nine F is it's name-
F is for futile, not for fame."

Don't knock it too much dude. It was useful as night fighter, and when initially encountered by the Germans was quite effective as they thought it was a Hurricane stooging along straight and level.

A dive down from a hi 6 position on the Defiant usually resulted in a big surprise. Of course once they got used to the idea it was approached from a lo 6 position and any German fighter could out turn the Defiant because of it's lo power to weight ratio/relatively high wing loading.

I've got some stories about early radar equipped night fighter Defiants formating on bombers and knocking chunks off them. I think there was an article in Aviation History in about 1997 that was a good read. WIll have a look.

IMHO they should put that turret in the P-47.  There's plenty of room.

Didn't need it in the p47:)

Line I heard at an airshow from an 8th AF pilot:-

'If you had to take evasive manoevers in a Thunderbolt, all you had to do was run around the cockpit'

Also if there was a fire in the cockpit you were supposed to dive on the floor and roll around.  :)
