Barry Sheene Dies :(
« on: March 10, 2003, 05:50:06 PM »
Heard Barry Sheene lost an 8 year battle against cancer earlier today, Only 52, I remember the day I got my "Barry Sheene Replica helmet" complete with Donald Duck logo. A sad loss. :(

The time he gave a live interview on release from hospital after his 170mph crash at Daytona will stick in my mind forever.

"So Barry what the first thing you are going to do when you get home"? Asked the reporter
Looking at his girlfriend (Can't remember her name) Barry repied "Well mate I'm gonna scre.............." At this point the sound went off and it was a quick "Back to the studio" :D

Classic.

:(

I met Barry Sheene,  along with Ron Grant and Mike Hailwood, many years ago at Daytona when i worked for Don Vesco.   Don was fielding a privateer(with considerable factory support)TR350 Yamaha for Kel Carruthers to run in the 200, and a TZ250 Yamaha for Cal Rayborn(Cal, a  member of the Harley-Davidson Team,  got a  special clearance from H-D to ride Don's Yamaha)   to run in the Lightweight race.

Sheene and Grant were wildmen, and Hailwood only slighty less-so.   I got a great insight(for an American)into  "English Humor"  from my week at Daytona that year.   Those guys were funny as hell and meeting them is something i will always remember.

My former boss, Don Vesco(World Land Speed Record Holder for motorcycles), also passed away last December from cancer.  He was only 63 years old.

Of those i mentioned above, only Kel Carruthers is still with us.  The rest, all extremely talented, very bright people  with engaging and unique personalities are ,  alas, gone :(

It was a 9 month battle. Stomach and throat cancer. Took him pretty quickly. :(

I was very young when Barry was at the height of his fame but even then I had toy bikes with the # 7 on em.

I tell ya, people wont miss Carl Fogerty like this.
