Why can't we kill ground targets in TA?
« on: March 10, 2003, 10:40:29 PM »
Why are TA ground targets indestructable? I need to run a training session for my squad in there, and nothing will die, not even AA guns.

What the heck good is the TA if you can't actually train and get results?

Maybe the TA was initially implemented as a teaching tool for A2A combat but I agree that ground targets should be destructable in there.

Never played head-to-head but if you can get enough of your squad in there you could set it up the way you want it....???

Weapon lethality in the TA is set very low so it is almost impossible to actually destroy anything.  You can always host a H2H game with your squaddies and set your own lethality in there.

It's been an item of discussion, but the key problem was that too many people would fly around and pork all the bases, making it frustrating to even try and launch aircraft (since no place had full fuel, or ammo, etc).  New players who typically showed up at A1 found the field almost constantly on fire, with aircraft often disabled because people have been strafing hangers for something to do.  It was frustrating so the only solution was to dumb down the weapons for now.

How about changing the rebuild times for the targets down to 5 minutes or something like that?

We've tried the H2H option, but always end up with one problem or the other (between firewalls, routers, IPs etc.)

I think the 5 minute thing was tried already but didn't work.  People were flying around with doubled ammo load in anything with lots of cannons and would strafe things the second then regen'd.  It meant that a structure was down for 5 minutes, then up for 10 seconds, then down for another 5.... anyone who tried to spawn was constantly annoyed that they wouldn't be able to launch (no hangers) or the fuel was porked.  It also lead to people bombing others on the runway with the jabo bombsight (which doesn't miss).

The TA has so many other "special mods" too in settings that it isn't really like the MA.  Double ammo, outside views enabled, no fuel burn rate, jabo-bombsight, etc... all good for training at an early level but more realistic training requires most of those to be set to more MA levels.  I don't even think the enemy ack levels are set that high and cause no damage.

H2H is the best way to practice air-to-ground attacks for the simple reason that you can turn off the AA guns. :)
