Biological weapon released?

Nah, it started somewhere in China...but China is most likely where the "end of the world virus" will begin if that makes you feel better (According to one of the worlds leading Immunologists here at the UW)

You guys do realise influenza pandemics are nothing new?

Something like 20 million were killed world wide shortly after WW1.

So let's drop the biological attack thing.

At some point influenza was 'new'. So why does this bug have to a biological attack?

Considering it's only killed 5 people across the whole of asia (high population density), I'd say it was pretty crap as a weapon.

Captain Trips seems more on-target... at least symptomatically

no Dowding, I never said anything about 'manufactured' viruses.. just that this new 'bug' is pretty scarey

I'm not sure if it's a new thing that's all. Everyone's a little more jumpy at the moment and maybe it's getting more press than usual?
