We all know Saddam has no weapons or long range missiles.  After all, he has told us this himself, and France certainly agrees with it.  So what then exactly was he firing into Kuwait?

Most likely the remaining 60 missles that he had been destroying.

perhaps he was so hurt, at America's disbelief, that he slapped some together after the ultimatum :)

Those didn't come from Saddam, the Kuwaitis fired those missles at themselves and simply blamed Saddam.

they are very tricky!

Makofan: We all know Saddam has no weapons or long range missiles. ... So what then exactly was he firing into Kuwait?

Kuwait is immediately adjacent to Iraq, so short range (150-180km) Al-Samoud missiles he used are quite sufficient to reach it.

Do you need explanation on the difference between "long" and "short"?

He is probably from a post-Sesame Street generation.

Reported by Fox News and CNN, 1 of those missiles was confirmed to be a Scud, which Saddam claimed to not have.

Hans Blix commented on it, but would neither confirm nor deny it.  Just said he wasn't surprised.

rumor is the iraqis were dismantling rockets in one room in front of UN inspectors and taking the parts into the next room and putting them back together.

I wonder who started it? Probably the same people that faked the documents of iraqis buying uranium from Nigeria. I thought the weapon inspectors mandate was to supervise destruction of the weapons, not dismantlement. There is a difference between those two even more pronounced than betwee "long" and "short".

Anyway, we will see if he has any Scuds (medium range) left if he launches one.

The newswire quoted the American military as calling the two missiles Scuds.  So perhaps that is why I mistakenly thought they were scuds.  Sorry I missed Sesame Street - I heard it's a good show :)
