Off Map or Off Dar
« on: May 08, 2001, 05:05:00 PM »
I was in the MA the other day when I saw over the open channel some Knits calling for someone from my country (bish) to announce who the scumbags <paraphrasing) were who were bringing an off-map raid to their HQ.  Checked the map and there sure was a raid...didn't look off-map at the time, but I was told that they had just crossed over into the on-map territory.  Well enough, whatever, I just continued my goon mission to a Knit base that was up with ack and cons...didn't go so well

After dying in a flaming goon, I decided I'd do a follow up run on Knit's HQ with an NOE run in a heavy Chog.  Being the Allied Opportunist that I am, I decided I'd take advantage of the off-mapper situation and run my hog up the West side of sectors 15,11-14, which are clearly on the map (look at the map below).  By doing so, I figured my sector bar would be mistaken for another off-map raid and any opposition would be searching high for an off map raid and I could slip by 'em low and unharmed  .

All went well until I got to 15,14 and headed West into Knits HQ sector, which at the time was 14,14.  Immediately after crossing the sector line, channel 1 erupted with kind words about the Bish who was yet again doing an off-map raid.  "WTF" I think, and private message Ripsnort to tell him I'm the one to their HQ and I WAS on the map.  Ripsnort knows way to much about AH and is a Knit, so I figured he was a good one to talk to    He let me know that sector 15 doesn't show bar dar...it's a bug he says that HT knows about and is probably getting fixed (as far as he knows).  So, being the gentleman that I am (& I probably wouldn't do to much damage anyhow), I ditched my ordinance and climbed to meet the defenders who would be coming to kill my off-mappin' arse.  I killed two of 'em   <pats self on back>, and got killed otw home deep in a cloud bank as I ignore the fact that even tho I can't be seen I can be found with dot dar...duh!

Am I the only one who didn't know this about sector 15?  I doubt it, which is why I'm posting this.  So, there it is for what it's worth, if you're in sector 15, you're in no-dar land, even if you're on the map.  I wonder if dot dar would show from any base that's close to the sector line?

People whine about those who fly off the map because they're out of radar range and hence can't be easily detected unless someone actually guards the area (not much fun)....

Yet many of the same people whine about the existance of radar at all.

Essentially, removing in-flight dar would turn the entire arena into an "off-map" raid.  So either stop whining about the "off-mappers" or stop asking for the removal of inflight dar

Yes, during the Battle of Britain he complained about Lacasters/Spitfires/hurricanes coming from the east of Europe and bombing the seashore LW bases.

Its not just a question of radar. Off map is essentially out of game bounds. IE, there is not supposed to be anyone there. For example, say dar was down (as it frequently has been for nits), we can at least look for buffs.

So turning off dar would not solve the offmap problem.

More thought on your next argument please. I give you a F-, definite cannon fodder.

Go off the map and your plane should explode resulting in a death.  Easy fix.

Make the map edges exist as structures.

Mox~! Long time no see!

I agree, good fix, and better yet, award the kill to the nearest enemy.

As to the lack of DAR creating the same problem.. I think most are lobbying for the removal of DOT dar.. while leaving the BAR dar in place.
