A7N8X Dlx & AMD ???
« on: March 20, 2003, 03:06:52 PM »
Ok,

Dumb question -- since I am primarily a Intel person, what should the Window's speed report be for an AMD 2000+ XP chip in a stock A7N8X Dlx mobo?

I did an install last night and expected windows 2k and the bios to report it running in the 1.47 or 1400 MHz range and it's coming up as a 1250 MHz.  Where do I start looking?  I know this board can be tweaked, but since I'm building for a friend, don't want to risk a lot of tweaks that cannot be maintained by said friend.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Make sure the bus speed is correct.  If it's less then 266mhz, then you'll get the low numbers you see.  The 2000+ has an internal clockspeed of 1.67ghz.

Setting the bus speed isn't a tweak, btw, so you shouldn't worry about stabillity.

Chairboy is right, sounds like FSB @100..........  100x12.5=1250
FSB should be @ 133 ............................. .......    133x12.5=1662

You guys have already answered the question correctly, but the only thing here is that the bios is going to report the FSB as 133 MHz vs 266 Mhz.

The correct settings for an AMD 2000+ would be a FSB (front side bus) of 133 MHz (which is effectively 266 MHz as it's double pumped).  You are also going to want to be sure your memory/cpu FSB divider is 1:1.  You should also check to be sure the CPU multiplier is 12.5 (this is typically fixed, so it should be right).

That looks like a really nice motherboard. I have been considering buying one myself. Post a review and some benchmarks when your finished setting up. Good luck.

I built a new system last month using that board,

A7N8X
AMD 2700
512MB-333
Ge4Ti4600

I didn't bother with the SATA, no real product support from the hard drive mfgs yet.

I don't have bench marks for you, but it's rock stable under WinXP and I have yet to see more than 2-4% fps change with clouds or smoke.

The previous system was based on a Soyo Dragon + with a XP2000/512MB-266 and same video card.  This system was very stable also, but would drop 35-45% with lots of smoke.  Clouds dropped it by 15%.

Thanks for the info.  The bus speed was the item.

Built two systems -- the first used Crucial PC2700 and works like a charm -- no decent video as it was built on the cheap as a donation to the church.

Second system has Mushkin PC2700 256 MB Blue level and it has problems.  Looking at AMDforums and Mushkin's forums it looks like the blue level Mushkin is not going to work.  Have to RMA it.  Any suggestions on RAM that is comparable to the blue level PC2700 and priced similiar -- $62.00.

Again, thanks for your posts.

PS: with 1 stick of crucial, I was "seeing" AH for the first time this weekend.  What a difference going from a gf2 mx to the TI4200.

googlegear.com has Kingston HyperX PC2700 512MB stick Memory on sale for $75 with free second day shipping.if i am not mistaken,  I have this memory in my 8rda+ and have no absolutey no issues with it at all (XP1600 processor at 166FSB running as a XP2100 on highest memory settings)  This RAM is cheaper, and just as good as the Crucial XMS memory, no one over at AMDMB.com has had any issues with it

Linky for the memory
