The warhorse looks more like a warhorse without that big hangy thing.

She's P47D s/n 45-49205 N47DE imported back from Peru. Photo from May of 73 around Galveston Texas. Forty eight found their way south and fortunately we got a few back.

Your probably right, 4 photos in the book, text was from a ground shot. Most likely Southern Calif before a ferry flight.

Something bothers me about these pics. If you look at the background mountains and clouds, it seems that they were taken almost simultaneously. Plane markings indicate it is the same plane, but it couldn't be a simple tank drop, because even the pylon is missing in the tankless picture.

And yet, shadows on the tank are correct, and detail on the mountain behind where the tank was in the other picture looks correct.

How did they make these pictures?

that is nopoops masterful editing (of one picture) you are witnessing, there is another thread where he does even more to it and it still looks outstanding.

Nopoop well done!  But could ya provide a nice pic of the Jug in 1280 X 1024?  Would be appreciated.  Resolutions to small on the ones posted to stretch across my desktop.

Hajo, finding a picture of that size is next to impossible on the net. Some pics are as large as 1024 but the majority of those have been expanded to that size, with grain, fuzzyness etc. The norm is 800 maximum. With even that, the times that the ratio is correct for a desktop is very rare.

I have a 1024 desktop. What I did so I can have them all as desktops as the mood strikes it make the "maximum" width 800 pixels using a black desktop background. The pics then don't hide behind my one row of icons and I can use any pic regardless of "ratio".

I do scan calenders ( DONT TELL ANYONE ) and with those the size you request are doable. Straight scans ( takes four ) yield a size of 3500 pixels or better that I merge, clean up and scale down.

Just about every pic at the website has been fiddled with one way or another. Whether changing contrast, saturation, removing imperfections, or removing backgrounds or adding them.

This F4 shot had great lighting, brought out the colors of the plane beautifully. Problem was it was a grey overcast day with a bunch of airport buildings in the background. It wasn't cropped well with a whole bunch of runway at the bottom of the picture. Found a simple solution from another photo that I had. Combining the two made for a good F4 photo instead of a blah one. The plane just jumps out at ya.

Hajo, take a look through my 47 shots, email me your choices. I'll get back to you on whether the shot you like is doable.

All P-47s were "razorbacks" through the P-47D-23-RA (all Jugs ending with "RA" designator were built in the Evansville, Indiana plant and all with "RE" designator were built in Farmingdale, NY plant).

With those very high moutains in the background, I don't think this is anywhere near Galveston Texas. In fact, I don't think they have any mountains in Texas that are that tall. Galveston is on the Gulf Coast and it's flat as a pancake.

P.S. Sorry I didn't read your follow-up post nopoop. My mistake.
