Good old days
« on: March 26, 2003, 11:11:10 AM »
Seen a guy on country channel today asking how to bomb.  It brought back memories of my days of being a newbie. Im gonna share some of my experiences when I was a newbie.

A freind I flew with in online ATC in Flight Sim 2002 had showed me this game.  I downloaded and he helped me with alot of the buttons that he learned in his first week as he was a newbie as well.  He would fly the B17 I would gun, and I loved gunning.  He would fly to the bigest furball and I would man the guns as red would apear in the sites. When I would be on I would always be on country channel, " Anyone need a gunner" every 2min until someone would say sure mia.

Then one day on country channel I seen, " MISSION UP PLEASE JOIN"  I thought oh wow theres missions. I quickly asked how to join a mission and someone helped me get in it.  I joined as a kate as it was the only to chose from.  Was four of us when mission launched and then my orders came in a yellow text, wich were to kill fuel.  I had no idea what was going on, so I asked on country channel what do I do Im new??.  The mission planer told me just to follow him so I did.  Then I heard him say, "Theres the base Im diving in follow me mia"  I was like where I dont see the base then I noticed he was diving so I dove in following him and then I seen the base with all that ack firing.  I heard his bombs drop then seen him explode, I thought oh wow Im gonna die were komikozeeing.  I droped my bombs and pulled up and seen a message saying Gun enplacement destroyed. I was like hell ya I destroyed the guns or something. I started heading home little beat up.  I started talking on range mic to see if any others had made it and no one responed.  Now I was in the middle of no where and had no clue where to go. I was lost in emeny territory is what I was thinking.  I was cruzing along at 14k pretty beat up monitoring my gauges since I had black smoke coming from my airplane.  I noticed my enging temp was climbing so I decided I have to land fast. Then I heard flak. I was like cool I am deap in enemy territory. I seen an ir craft carrier out my right wing. I thought hey I could land there comeing from fs2002 I was pretty confident I could do it. I dove down to 10k and was flying base leg to the cv and all of a sudden all kinds of fire was coming up at me so I turned around and started climbing again. I was thinkin that might not be a friendly cv.  I pulled my clipboard up and tryed to find where the hell I was at but I could not find my plane anywhere on all that red or green, so I called out on channel one hey im lost I need some help.  Then at 12 oclock I seen 3 enemy F4Us winging together. I thought hey I follow them they probaly going to one of my bases.  Crusing along I hear a hear a deep CHECK 6, so I quickly checked my 6 and there was 109 500 off my 6 so I dove,, seeing tracers fly by window doing all kinds of manuvers while diving, I pulled up when seeing ocean coming up fast and hearing a explosion. Then I seen on the chat, HOST: you have killed *******. ( I dont rember the name), and I was like wow he must of hit the water and I started laughing my bellybutton off.  Then I called out on range again anyone out there and someone replied laughing, " yes mia I am. Then I asked how to get home from here and he said theres a cv If you go East. I told him thanks I need to land my plane aint gonna last much longer.  He asked if I had seen a cv out there I told him ya I was gonna land on it until it started fireing at me.  So I headed East swearing I came from this way but wasnt paying attetion to the compass.  Then I seen  the cv turning and the F4Us blowing up as they were diving into it.  I thought " oh great they gonna sink it then where am I gonna land", but lucky me it was still floating.  I started my final when I lost my engine, not having alot of alt I was praying, but had to ditch her in the water.

I think somone should make a thread based on these newb stories. IDK about you guys but i think they are good reads and quite funny. Expecially if you read a story about a bud of yours or one of the better pilots, could give the newbs some inspiration ;) j/k

Steve this was way before that night.  I know you and akak can recall roping me alot when I was new. I could never figure out why my plane wouldnt go vertical at 180mph with 2-1000lb bombs on it:)   That missoin was in the freetrial weeks. HEHE I came from janes combat so flight dynamics here were just tad diff. lol

Thinking now,, That was fun when I didnt know what was going on or getting lost.  Wounder what it would be like to not have the clipboard available, to only beable to look at the map in the maproom. But then the map in map room would have to show dot dar and darbars..  That would make my game play little more fun or make me alittle more alert and have to plan sorties better.

In my opinion the game is a bit too "gamey" in that regard. The clipboard should be available, but shouldn't show your position or dar info. I liked the EAW method of calling an AI "ground controller" and he would tell you the bearing, range, heading and alt of the nearest enemy, or your target. Map room could be used to designate a target (AF, CV etc.), and you would have to call the AI controller to vector you in. That would have been great.

Yep, without seeing your own pos on the map it would be a far more challenge to find youre target or the way home. But I would make it optional.
Or something similar to IL2-IL2FB, an AI voice from the tower who tells  the general bearing to the homefield.

That would be cool.  I think that could be the biggest improvement AH could make, for me anyways
