Zoom view
« on: January 22, 2002, 10:17:22 AM »
I have been on AH a couple of months now and love the program except for one thing- the zoom view.  This view is necessary for me to see my target well enough but it seems like the graphics/views could have been done so as to not need this?  It is not intuitive or authentic and gives me another difficult detail to handle while trying to stay on an enemy’s jinking 6.  Isn’t there a better way this could have been done or am I missing something all the experts know?  Thanks.

I dont use zoom when saddled up on someones 6 such as you described.

The only time i find it usefull is when attacking ground targets, and BNZ on a low con (so i can get his directional heading early). but even at that i take it off zoom once im 600 or so out. I have a huge monitor though so this may not suit you.

You realize that you can adjust the distance of the zoom? i think it may be + and -, not sure i have it re-mapped.

The Zoom view is actually just changing your field of view.  Not having zoom on gives you the largest FoV, but distorts the size of objects.  Narrowing the FoV removes the distortion, making the objects appear closer to real lif size.

The "zoom view" allows you to change your very wide POV angle, on the monitor, to a realistic one that brings objects closer to real life size. A by product of that is it restricts your FOV.

As for the zoom being "authentic" Well, it's about as authentic as using a mouse for a 'check 6' call,  the "/" key to use the radio where you typically "type" in what you would normaly speak or using a PC monitor to give a "spacial view" of a world around you in the first place.

Your other options would be a stepped arrangement ala WB III/WW2O which gives you a few preset FOV angles. I do not like either.  The other option is "none at all", the old one fixed fov/pov ala old AW and WB 2.xx, which is the worst choice of all imo.

Granted it is another feature that needs to be gotten used to. All part of the learning curve in AH.  I recommend just buckling up and work with it till you are able to use it.  It won't take long. Of course you could always ignore the feature and stick with the old tried and true "static" view too.

without zoom I cant aim and hit at any target, hardly see the planes at 400 yards, but with zoom I cant follow moving targets.

So, what about having zoom only with frontal view? that is:

You switch on the zoom and, until switched off, you will have zoom automatically activated in frontal view and deactivated for anyother view. That way you'll be able to follow maneouvering planes getting out of your frontal view and shooting at them as soon as you re-align your frontal view with them.

Also, two levels of predefined zoom would  be welcome.

Perhaps, another key could be configured to activate zoom with any view.

"So, what about having zoom only with frontal view?"

I'd have to vote no on that.  I use it often when looking out several other views (left, right, forward right, forward left for examples) to reconnoiter vehicles on the ground and/or to survey damage to ground installations I'm attacking. It's not used just for air-air combat.

As for predefined? As long as it's a supplement to what is there I think that would be a 'plus'

Interesting enough, every now and then, when driving down the freeway, I find myself searching with my thumb a button on my steering wheel to give me zoom capability of checking for a Smokie up about a mile in advance, does this mean I play too much? :D
