DVD Burner?
« on: March 30, 2003, 10:53:03 PM »
S!

(I also posted this in O-Club).

OK, I am thinking about buying a DVD burner, and am looking for some recommendations.

What capabilities do I want? Well, I guess two primary capabilities. Take a DVD and convert it onto something that could be read on regular CD-ROM (Divx type stuff) ... and of course burn divx type stuff I have onto DVD-ROM.

I dont know anything about the hardware out there, and any guidance would be welcomed, especially about what I should expect to pay for a solid product.

It would also be nice if the the burner had good CD-burner capabilities, as my CD burner is 8/4/32, a little outdated nowadays.

Thanks in advance for the help!

SONY DRU-500A or SONY DRU-500AX

Rather expensive at $350 but it is by far the best one available,  percistently sold out at newegg and several other online vendors.  Every Computer geek raves about this drive.  Burns every type of media out there DVD+R 2.5X,DVD+RW4X,DVD-R 2.4X,DVD-RW12X ,CD-RW40X

Check http://www.techbargains.com for prices as SOMETIMES they have rebates but the drives are snatched up as soon as it gets posted there

The Sony drive Pfunk mentioned above is the only one that will burn both common types of recordable DVD media.  (-R and +R types)

Nec ND-1300 DVD+-R/RW can also handle both norms and is cheaper here than Sony (280€ vs 400€].
