Edwin Starr dies aged 61 :-(
« on: April 03, 2003, 03:35:46 AM »
Well I liked him..... Still touring right up until the end. Edwin Starr died of a suspected heart attack at home early yesterday morning :(

Most will only remember him for his 1970 Vietnam Protest Hit "WAR!" (No 1 in US, No3 in UK). It was due for a re release but not sure now.

He moved from the US to the UK about 30 years ago and lived about 2 miles from me up until he moved to Nottingham a few years ago. His Limo (The size of a small bus) was a regular although strange sight cruising around the country lanes in the UK.

RIP Edwin

War
===

War... (huh!) Yeah!
What is it good for?
Absolutely... (nothin'!) Uh huh uh hu-uh.

War... (huh!) Yeah!
What is it good for?
Absolutely... (nothin'!) Say it again y'all.

War... (huh!) Look out!
What is it good for?
Absolutely... (nothin'!) Listen to me.

Ahhh war...
I despise, cause it means destruction of innocent life.
War means tears to thousands of mothers' eye,
when their sons go off to fight and loose their life.

I said, war... (huh!) Good God y'all.
What is it good for?
Absolutely... (nothin'!) Say it again.

War... (huh!) Whoa whoa whoa Lord.
What is it good for?
Absolutely... (nothin'!) Listen to me.

War...
It ain't nothin' but a heart breaker.
War...
Friend only, to the undertaker.

Ahhh war...
Is an enemy to all mankind.
The thought of war blows my mind.
War has caused unrest within the younger generation.
Induction, then destruction. Who wants to die?

Ahhh war... (huh!) Good God y'all.
What is it good for?
Absolutely... (nothin'!) Say it, say it, say it.

War... (huh!) Uh huh yeah, huh!
What is it good for?
Absolutely... (nothin'!) Listen to me.

War...
It ain't nothin' but a heart breaker.
War...
It got one friend, that's the undertaker.

Ahhh war...
Has shattered, many a young mans dreams.
Made him disabled, bitter and mean.
Life is but too short and precious,
To spend fighting wars these days.
War can't give life, it can only take it away.

Ahhh war...

Wooo!

Peace, love and understanding, tell me.
Is there no place for them today?
They say we must fight, to keep our freedom,
But Lord knows there's got to be a better way.

Ahhh war... (huh!) Good God y'all.
What is it good for?
You tell 'em. (nothin'!) Say it, say it, say it, say it.

War... (huh!) Good God now, huh!
What is it good for?
Stand up and shout it. (nothin'!)...

Propaganda death ensemble
Burial to be
Corpses rotting through the night
In blood laced misery
Scorched earth the policy
The reason for the singe
The pendulum it shaves the blade
The strafing air blood raid

infiltration push reserves
Encircle the front llines
Supreme art of strategy
Playing on the minds
Bombard till submission
Take all to their graves
Indication of triumph
The number that are dead

CHORUS
Sport the war, war support
The sport is war, total war
When victory's a massacre
The final swing is not a drill
It's how many people I can kill

CHORUS

Be dead friend from abve
When darkness falls
Descend into my sights
Your fallen walls
Spearhead break through the lines
Flanked all around
Soldiers of attrition
Forward their ground
GRegime prophetic age
Old in its time
Flowing veins run on through
Deep in the Rhine
Center of the web
All battles scored
What is our war crimes
(Era forever more...war)

Propaganda war ensemble
Burial to be
Bones shining in the night
In blood laced misery
Campaign of elimination
Twisted psychology
When victory is to survive
And death is defeat

CHORUS
Sport the war, war support
The sport is total war
When victory's a massacre
When victory is survival
When this end is a slaughter
The final swing is not a drill
It's how many people I can kill

Edwin  :(

Yrusy one of the best songs ever made, if not at least for the lyrics, definitelty the instrumental!

That was my war chant before college football games...he will be missed, but he'll never be forgotten
