I love this game but...
« on: April 02, 2003, 11:01:00 AM »
... still don't understand the community.

How many people are there actively posting on these forums and reading them? I tend to believe it is a very small hard-core group of very frustrated individuals who wouldn't dare to even look me in the eye if the came across me IRL.

I used to read the forums for fun and to learn a few things but boy, are you guys rude to each other. Do you act like that to your friends (if you have any left), your wife, your children, your colleagues? Some seem to be rude for the sake of rudeness itself (pretty easy on the net), and there is an awful lot of 'I am right, and you are SO STUPID' kindergarten stuff too.

There's also quite a lot of whining (I never understood the meaning better than after a few months here!) about how people HAVE TO fly and behave in the game, or how HTC is OBLIGED to fix that bug, add that plane... there's no end to it. And the majority of the people here is waaay over 30 too! It's a game folks, supposed to be fun!

Some people have been friendly and helpful (thank you), and the game is fun, even if you hardly play more than an hour per day (so you'll never become any good like me) But I experienced nothing, I repeat NOTHING of the cameraderie I expected between people who share a common interest for WWII aviation and might be expected to show a little respect for each other and for the people who make all this possible.

Actually, I've met a lot of these 'more active' folks at the last con, and as a general defense to all, I thought they were pretty decent folks. Most frequent posters seem to have a real love for the game (whether they admit it or not) and this sometimes effects what they post. Sure there are some real harsh words here but that is the nature of anonymous BBs.

to the AH community.

BTW - what does your callsign (hogenbor) mean?

you should find a squad to fly with, and remember most people in here are ok, the noisy few stand out because they are noisy.

Sure, I expect if I would meet them, some of them will turn out to be nice guys I'd like to drink a beer with (if I would drink beer).

I am used to anonymous BBs, but I didn't expect that kind of behavior here, among grown up people with a common interest.

The point is that way back in the days when I didn't have internet, I dreamt of being able to play a game like this and read everything I could about WarBirds and Air Warrior. The game is indeed great, but I turned out to be somewhat naive in believing that people would be (or remain) as enthousiastic as I was (and still am!)

And my callsign? That's EXTREMELY boring... I wanted a cool name but they seemed to be all taken. So I took my UNIX log-in from work... First seven letters of my last name, the first letter of my first name. My last name translates to 'high tree' by the way. I don't like Hogs, I think they climb and accellerate unforgivably slowly and spin violently at the slightest provocation. Every kill in one I treasure. Planes I love most? FM-2 and P-51. I hate most? F4U1-D & Me-109-G6

I've been playing one online game or another for almost 10 years . Jerks are a common denominator. It is not limited to AH.

Every time I think about how rude people in the game are, I go play a game of Battlefield 1942 on a public server.  The sheer number of tulips are like a bucket of cold water being poured down my back, and I come waddling back to AH with my arms open and tears streaming from my face at the thought of how wonderful the people here are....   compared to those that play Battlefield 1942.

Think I'm exaggerating?  Ok, in BF1942 (which, don't get me wrong, is a very fun game) there are limited airplane spawn points.  People camp out at those plane spawn points and wait for a plane to appear, then try and grab one right away with no sense of line or 'first here, first to fly'.  Oh, and god forbid you take a plane when someone else who has just spawned thinks that THEY should have it instead.  Your compatriot (on the same team and everything) will just as often as not throw grenades or shoot your plane to try and blow it up because if HE can't have it, nobody can.

The team play is limited to capturing bases.  Any organization is accidental, and the only use of the in-game chat is to call people cheaters and spew racist garbage.  You think channel 1 is bad?  Spend 15 minutes on a BF1942 game and you'll be crying like a baby.

If there was some way to get the graphics of BF1942 into Aces High so the community and game play would be what we have now, that would be great.   Until then, into the breach.

I have to agree with you Chairboy, I played BF1942 for a very short time. After being run down by friendly jeeps followed by taunting and laughter etc etc, I just couldn't get into the 'team' mentality.

At least when they shoot me in AH they blow up so there is some satisfaction.

The average age of the users here is probably 35 YO...
Enjoy the game, join a squad and make some friends...
The BBS is like a dark alley in Queens, everybody hates everybody and they would all kill each other if they had a chance too... At the user convention every year HTC has to hire off duty police officers to control the crowd and check for weapons on the way into the conference room...
Save yourself!!!! stay as far away from the BBS as possible!!
you wont regret taking this advice....
Peace
