Patch 4 problems continue...
« on: April 02, 2003, 06:25:22 PM »
I spent the afternoon formatting my hard drive, installing a fresh copy of Win2K, installed SP2, loaded my Nvidia 30.82's after uninstalling the 29.XX that came with the CD, loaded DirectX 8.1, installed the sound card drivers, loaded the Microsoft Sidewinder2 drivers, downloaded a fresh copy of AH1114.exe which installed without a hitch and started AH.  Again, the game freezes at the splash screen.  My hair is all pulled out and my cats are refusing to come anywhere near me, which is actually something good from all of this.  Any other ideas guys?

Yes, SP3 and upgrading the VIA APOLLO pro drivers to 4in1 4.46.  What happens when I run DXDIAG is that when it runs the Direct3D test, the Direct 7 test runs ok but when it runs the Direct 8 test it always locks up.  Now, when I run IE for browsing, I will bring down a menu and it will sometimes show a broken-graphic of the menu, i.e. pits and pieces of colored blocks and locks up the computer.  This happens about every 5 to 30 mins and sometimes longer than that.  This is soooo bizarre.

What video card do you have?  Do you have it over clocked or running a tweak program like GTU or RivaTuner?

Have you previously uninstalled the Nvidia drivers before installing new ones?  If you don't, sometimes conflicts can arise between the different versions of the driver.  It's best to uninstall the drivers through the Add/Remove in the Control Panel and then running a program like Nvidia File Remover to make sure that all files relating to the driver have been removed.  Then install the new drivers.  Afterwards, reinstall DirectX.

Does your computer freeze when you try to run any DirectX 8 game or is AH the only one?

Yes, it happens to any game running DirectX, I am now under the impression that the video card is bad.  Everything else checks fine.  It is a PNY GeForce4 Ti 4200 about 9 months old.  I did uninstall all drivers using Add/Remove Programs and Detonator Destroyer.  I am going to pull the video card and put in another and see if that corrects the problem.

Hmm,...I am more inclined to think it is a bad install of DirectX.

Unfortunately, you can't just reinstall over it, as Windows gets clever and does not over-write files that it thinks have not changed.

But it is worth a shot to try to re-install DirectX.  Some application or virus could have stomped on a DLL in DirectX.

If that's the case, he should use DXBuster to uninstall DirectX and reinstall it or install DirectX 8.1b from his WinXP CD.

I tried going back between 8.1 and 9a using the DXbuster, neither one worked.

If it's not too late, try returning your video card or if it is too late to return it, call the manufacturer and request an RMA# so you can return it for a new one.
