walter p38 best pistol of world war II?

okay boys i was just 'nerding out' and watchin discovery channel show on german small arms of world war II. some guy on show said walther p38 is best pistol of world war II because it only pistol that is 'double then single'. not a world war II gun expert. id say id want a colt 1911 if i had a submachinegun or carbine as my primary and a browning hp in 9mm if i had a rifle or auto rifle or machinegun as my primary. pretty sure that the hp is double then single as well. if you have done alot of shooting, carried pistol in combat as a secondary, whats your vote and why.

There's nothing wrong with the P38, but to base your opinion solely on the basis of double-action is somewhat silly.  I would agree with you that my two choices would be the 1911 and the Hi-Power, with the nod going to the 1911.  The Hi-Power has a bigger magazine, but the 1911 has the greater stopping power.

However, getting anyone to agree on which gun is best is very hard.   ;)

I have a Soviet TT33 Tokarev pistol dated 1939.  It certainly isn't anywhere near a match pistol.  But it sure is dependable.  Only draw back is ammo is usually not all that readily available.

One more thing, if any one living in the former Soviet Union can get their hands on a WWII holster to fit it I would be very interested in buying it.  All I see on ebay are Chinese, North Korean, and Polish leather.

Oh ya the P38! it's ok I guess :D

P38, and  hi power were both excellent and accurate self loaders that were crippled by an underpowerd cartrige.   The 1911 was a far better firearm...  The .45 was a perfect close quarters ball ammo round.   The Colt was even flatter.   Most people have trouble with double action autos like the 38 and the hi power because the first round takes such a different trigger pull (longer) than subsequent ones.

All three firearms have expossed hammers tho which is a good thing IMO.

let me explane what i have noticed about those shows, what ever country whose guns, airplanes, tanks, ships that are featured in the show, they are the greatest that ever have been.

example:
if country X's air planes are featured in that show then they are the greatest, same goes for guns, ships, tanks, it seems that there is no objectivity, only some biased view point that changes with each show.

watch with a grain of salt, or maybe a shaker full of salt.

russian 9mm ammo is dirt cheap from several sources including.... "cheaper than dirt" and "the ammoman".  I think even wolf makes cheap makarov stuff.

The 7.62x25 ammo is out there but it's something normally not in the local neighborhood.  Have to order it http://www.keystonearms.com/ammo~non.html

buy it by the 1,000 round case.   better price that way anyhow... some of it is even boxer primed so you can reload it if you want.
