How to hit ships with PT boat torpedos.
« on: November 19, 2001, 08:07:00 PM »
I posted this infromation a while back.  Since we have a whole bunch of new guys I thought I would post it again.

There IS a method to use PT boat torpedos accurately that does not use luck or Kentucky windage (guessing).

First, you have to understand the concept of the collision course.  If your moving, and something else is moving, and the other guy doesn't seem to be moving left or right in view, your on a collision course.  He isn't flying straight at you, but is growing larger and his bearing from you is constant.

Second, your torpedo is slightly slower than your boat.

So, if you slow down to match the torpedo's speed, and deliberatly run an intercept course, your torpedos will likewise run an intercept course.

I found 2400 RPM setting for the engines will duplicate the speed of the torpedos.  I paced them offline to get that number.  The speed indicator isn't sufficently acurate enough to get a good match, but the RPM indicator was.

I also aim using the gun turrets.  You can swing the guns around on the target, zoom in to max zoom level, and use the rudder controls to turn the boat left or right to get on the intercept course.

The only other advice is to drop all four torpeods, but none on the same course.  Fire off a spread.  The first one should be on that intercept course you ran, and the other three should be at slight angles to that so you get a spread.  There is no point in saving the torpedos for a second run.  You probably won't live that long.

Hans.

This is an excellent briefing. It works.

Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

I just wanna know how to hit a ship with torps from a Ju88.  I must have fired off about 50 of the things without ever hitting anything.  I've fired from 90 degree deflection to head on to tail shots and I usually drive right in until the cv escorts are firing...  How do you hit the stupid things???

Wait until the ship is about 1/3 of the way from the edge of the screen to the gunsight at 90 degree angle.  Works in WB.

Actually, being able to run an intercept course is useful in flying too.  If your chasing somebody a long ways off, you should do the same thing.  Turn so that the other guy is not moving left or right in view.

Coincidently, this is how modern heat seeking missles do it too.

Ok so thats how to run an intercept course but one question remain unanswered - what is the max range you fire those bad boys off from and still expect them to make it to target?

I drop the torpedos when my gut says, "Hey, fool...them ships over der are about to rip your head off with really big flying metal things that go 'boom'.  Drop the stupid torpedos."

Hey, I just let you know how to aim them.  You still have to do SOME of the work yourself.

About the time that the yellow ack from the ships are raiseing white waterspouts all around you. It's time to drop those darn fish and try to get the heck out of harms way.

Good luck.

As to JU-88, you have to be closer, faster torpedoes, but they have correspondingly shorter range.

The torpedoes have a range of about 2.5 mile
The runtime is 4 min, so if you are coming
in from the side, you actually have to
get within 1 mile but aim 65 degree in front
of the ship. (torp speed is about 39 mph ? )
Now thats just to dangerous.
So a better if possiible approach, is to
come in from the front, where you can
launch it from 5 miles away on a non
turning target, use the zoom to aim proper.

What do u mean NON TURNING TARGET? Doesn't the CV turn to starboard or port to avoid the torpedo?
If thats true then Torpedo bombing is a a piece of cake....   ;)
