Just to expand on Reschke's post about the NIC, the issue is that in XP by default TCPIP defaults to DHCP: it goes and searches for something to assign an IP address to the NIC. Naturally, not being on a network, the computer can't find one and so times out.l To get around this, either disable the NIC in XP or assign a static IP address to the NIC.

There's a bug in XP SP1 that can cause very high hard disk load times. There was a patch available at microsoft for it..

Too bad I forgot the link, if you're interested search for my thread 'Have XP SP1 and high load times?' or whatever it was.
