Protestor, or enemy combatant?
« on: April 16, 2003, 03:38:34 PM »
At what point do "protestors" become combatants, and the use of lethal and/or non-lethal force is warranted?  I am not talking about crowd control, I am talking about violent protest.

I remember reading about the protestors in Oakland last week that got hit with knee-knockers fired by police after some hurled rocks, steel bolts and concrete at officers in riot gear.  Some questioned the use of knee-knockers (others questioned getting hit in the cranium with them).

Then I see pictures like the one below from Athens, Greece today.  If I were a cop, and that guy was throwing that Molotov cocktail at me, I would have shot him with whatever round I had at my disposal.

As a news flash to you, Greece has had it's own problems with terrorists. So it's quite possible those guys throwing the stuff really _are_ terrorists.

Last summer the government made a huge crack-down on the largest terrorist group of the country, which murdered a CIA high official among others. They were making arrests all summer.

As a side note, US troops are reported to open fire on unarmed crowds in baghdad multiple times. Your troops starting to get advice from your Israeli buddies?

Heh, in my country, if any idiot lobs a fire bottle, he will get shot or bayonated.

Rocks, sticks, insults, all are fine on a protest.. they can beat the **** outta you if the rocks are bigger than an egg though.

Lob a rock, thats an aggressive act. Lob a firebomb, thats attempted murder with a weapon... and in any civilized country, if you go into main street in a warm sunny day and start lobbing those things, the police will eventually have to shoot you.
