German Aux. Cruiser KMS ATLANTIS (Ex-Goldenfels)
Captain Bernhard Rogge
(SHIFF #16 to the Germans, RAIDER C to the British)

22 Ships sunk or taken (Includeing 3 prizes) = 145,697 tons.

Sunk by British Heavy Cruiser H.M.S. Devonshire.

NOTE: This picture of the raider Atlants, in the diguise of the S.S. Tamesis, was taken by LIFE photographer David Scherman from a lifeboat just after the raider had attacked and sank the ship S.S. Zamzam that he was a passenger on. He smuggled the film past the German guards in a tube of toothpaste and it was the first photo the Allies had of the raider.

Sounds like I wouldn't want to be the coast guard trying to stop that cargo vessel.

The German Hilfskreuzer (Aux. Cruisers) were indeed bad news. One even managed to sink the Australian Light Cruiser H.M.A.S. SYDNEY in a battle before herself being sunk.
But even with their heavy armament they were still converted merchant ships designed to hunt other merchant ships and could not stand in battle for long with a proper warship.

Atlantis's armament was:
6 x 5.9" main guns
1 x 75mm bow chaser
1 x twin 37mm AA Gun
4 x single 20mm AA Guns
4 x single 21" torpedo tubes
92 x mines - magnetic and contact.
2 x HE 114 Seaplanes (Later AR 196's)

Some of the other Aux. Cruisers carred even more AAA guns and one even carried a mini-E-Boat.
