"With new tactics and precision weapons, we can achieve military objectives without directing violence against civilians.  No device of man can remove the tragedy from war.  Yet it is a great advance when the guilty have far more to fear from war than the innocent."  President George W. Bush, May 1, 2003 aboard the returning USN aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.

Vader, it would appear you've missed the point President Bush was trying to make.  I offer you a little more of the content of this address.  Perhaps the added context will make it easier for you to understand his point.  Bold type and added for clarity.

In the images of falling statues, we have witnessed the arrival of a new era.  For a hundred years of war, culminating in the nuclear age, military technology was designed and deployed to inflict casualties on an ever-growing scale.  In defeating Nazi Germany and imperial Japan, Allied Forces destroyed entire cities, while enemy leaders who started the conflict were safe until the final days.  Military power was used to end a regime by breaking a nation.

Today, we have the greater power to free a nation by breaking a dangerous and aggressive regime.  With new tactics and precision weapons, we can achieve military objectives without directing violence against civilians.  No device of man can remove the tragedy from war.  Yet it is a great advance when the guilty have far more to fear from war than the innocent

In simple terms, the President is saying that in this war, the Coalition targeted the regime, and not the Iraqi people.  In past wars, we had to go through the people to get to the regime.  He is not intimating that civilians were not hurt in Iraq (indeed, he labels it a "tragedy") only that we had the means and the tactics to minimize innocent loss of life (i.e. non-combatants).  Hope that aids your understanding.

Respectfully,
Sabre

In 1935, a French visitor asked Soviet leader Josef Stalin if he thought Pope Pius XI might prove to be an ally.

"The Pope! how many divisions has he got?"
- Stalin

"Tell my son Josef that he will meet my divisions in eternity."
- Reply from the Pope when he heard the story years later.

"Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things."

Success flourishes only in perseverance -ceaseless, restless perseverance. -- Baron Monfred von Richthofen

"Study strategy over the years and achieve the spirit of the warrior. Today is victory over yourself of yesterday; tomorrow is your victory over lesser men."

COME TO THE EDGE
Come to the edge. We might fall. Come to the edge. It's too high!
Come to the edge !
And they came, and he pushed, and they flew. -- Logue, Christopher, English poet (1926- )

"You win battles by knowing the enemy`s timing, and using a timing which the enemy does not expect."
by Miyamoto Musashi

"Be certain your Equal Time Point is not beyond your Point of No Return." unkown

"Generally speaking, the Way of the warrior is resolute acceptance of death." by Miyamoto Musashi

A MiG at your six is better than no MiG at all. -- Unknown U.S. Fighter Pilot

I had another [MiG] in sight at my 10 o'clock, in a left turn.... I pulled sharp left, turned inside him, pulled my nose up about 30 [degrees] above the horizon, ...barrel rolled to the right, held my position upside down above and behind the MIG until the proper angular deflection and rang parameters were satisfied, completed the rolling maneuver, and fell in behind and below the MiG-21 at his seven o'clock position at about.95 mach. Range was 4500 feet, angle off 15. The MiG obligingly pulled up well above the horizon and exactly down sun. I put the pipper on his tailpipe, received a perfect [missile] growl, squeezed the trigger once, hesitated, then once again. The first Sidewinder leapt in front and within a split second, turned left in a definite and beautiful collision course correction .... Suddenly the MiG-21 erupted in a brilliant flash [of] orange flame. -- Colonel Robin Olds, USAF

Krotki, during WW2 the 101st Airborne was defending Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge.

Surrounded by several german divisions (panzers included I believe),  and sieged for a long time, the German commander sent an envoy to the american commander asking for his surrender.

The reply came back : NUTS!

(aka, ' go to hell' )

Suave posted:"I've not yet begun to fight."
John Paun Jones

He said this as his ship was being sunk, he should've began to fight . He would've lived longer . "

Suave:

John Paul Jones and his men won the battle of which you speak.  Also, Jones lived though this battle, died many years later of an illness that had nothing to do w/ this combat.

So, WTF are you talking about?
