Pan views with mouse or X/Y Axes
« on: October 09, 2001, 01:02:00 PM »
I'm wondering if anyone has had success using pan views with a mouse or the X/Y axes of a joystick.

The reason I ask is that I have become rather used to using both panned snap views and mouse-pans in IL-2 Sturmovik.  It's great to get a look at instruments or for other reason.  I'd like to be able to do the same sort of thing in AH, and I know it is possible to have panning.

Right now I can select either regular snap views (instant or panning types) via Shift-F3 or a slow pan using the hat via F3.  I'd like to know if I can use both at the same time (operated by differing device inputs, natuarally).

While I see that there are options to map both View Pitch and View Yaw, I haven't had any success doing that... is that solely for shifting perspective (i.e. like using the keys to move around in the cockpit to save a new head position?).

I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to use both snap and panned views in the same instance.

Cheers,
phaetn

Hello Phaetn, This is a Reply that I wrote to Pie on this mouse look issue. I have asked Hitech as well about this, but have not received a difeniate answer on it.

read below.

You can do it pei, but its not good, because it does not:
A. Let you move the mouse around the complete FOV "360 degrees of visual looking"

For some reason It only lets you View 90 degrees of each X or Y axis. What this means is that You may be able to only look completly down/up and only the Left hemisphere of the complete 360 degree circle of view.

B. You have to hold down a Mouse button down in order for the Mouse view to work, What this does is limit the idea of a "Free mouse Look"

I have tried this setup in IL2 and it works beautifully. In IL2 I have it set so that my Mouse controls the complete 360 degree FOV while at the same time allowing for the Left/Right mouse buttons to be Throttle controls.

I wish Aces High could get this straigtened out.

Pei in order for you to map your mouse to view so you can see what I am talking about, you need to open up your map view (esc key) choose "Setup-->Joystick Setup-->Select Joystick.
What you will see now is a screen that is called "Joystick Selection" What you need to do is select the "view pitch" from under the "AH control" category and choose the "MOUSE" (so you are assigning the pitch feature to the Mouse)then select the "X axis" for the pitch under the "Joystick Input" category(you do this because X is the axis where the Up/Down motion pivots on.

Now choose the Yaw, assign it to the mouse, and then to Y axis.

Make sure that after you choose the options you press "Set Input" otherwise it wont save.

I have the flu, so I may be explaining strange. (my brain is bleh right now )

anyhow.. try it see if it works for you.

Thanks for the quick reply, Highflyer.

It seems like I had done that, but didn't really notice.   :)  For me the mouseview defaults to looking over the right wing, at about a 45 degree upwards angle.  It doesn't center on the cockpit, unfortunately.

It needs the F3 / Shift-F3 to toggle it on and off.  Anyone know if they can be used together?

Cheers,
phaetn

Glad to help, Too bad it doesnt work well in Aces high like it does in IL2. I would like to be able to look at very precise incrememtal views in realtime with the mouse.

Using mouse View also gives a move realistic feel, for the fact that you can track a target across the screen at the realistic visual degrees of sight within the cockpit.

A button to toggle free mouse view could fix this.

S!Since I once use IMB Thinkpad laptop pc I have thinking new (is it?) viewing system to the joystick. Of course games need support mouse view to get some advantege from this system.

Lets assum the we have Thinkpads “mouse hat” in joystick (or to throttle a’la X36) and assume that the AH support three kind a of pan modes.

1.Normal Pan-mode a’la Falcon 4. No full 6 a clock view etc.
2.Spring mode: View return automaticly to forward (center) view if you release the hat.
3.Set Center mode:  kind a submode of mode 2. You can set your general view direction (center) and Spring mode works normaly until you return to mode 1 or 2.
Pan speed depends how far/hard you push the hat.

Maybe I make some changes to my X36 stick and start flyin Su-27 Flanker v2.* again
