fwiw all those pictures and movies I posted of skiing this year were with my Elf.. I have a couple of other cameras, including a 35mm slr cannon.. but I usually use the elf.

convenience... imagine skiing with a huge 45mm with lenses, etc.. every day, just in case a good shot comes along.

or.. the elf.. I forget it's there until I need it.

If you've got the dough for a dSLR, do it.  Too many reasons to count.
Yeah, try a bunch, find what works for you.

I shoot in the highest resolution possible, then downmix later.  If you bought a digital camera, you can afford a decent sized Flash card to store your pictures on (before you upload them of course).

4 and 5 megapixels? Yeah, there's a difference.  How big is it?I dunno, about 15 percent?
How much is it worth to you?
Buy to match your shooting style.  I like a lot of manual control.

Powershot G2 owner here...worth every penny. Easy for beginner, tons of features for advanced photoghraphy. Cool feature includes the ability to swap out the lens with telephoto lens. very cool digital camera. I think g3 is just update version of this, my friend has one & loves it.

Hmmm.

Ok well the G3 has the bigger optical zoom but the S50 is the only 5MPixel camera of the 3.......

G3 has 4x optical zoom (nice Canon optics too) G3 reports to be better at lowlight conditions that most other cameras in its class. As for the difference between 4 & 5 MP, there are definitely some 5MP camers with worse image quality than the 4 MP G3. The Nikon Coolpix cameras are very good too... but I read they are not as good with lowlight as the G3... which is where 1/2 my pictures are taken.

I have a Kodak DC-265.

It's a few years old, but it takes beautiful 1600x1200 pictures and can take pictures with sound and more.  It's great picture with a great optical zoom, but it's not small.

Kodac DX3700 3.1 mp.

Wife bought it about a year and a half ago. It's ok, but the battery doesn't last long. It's a good thing she bought the cradle, it's a charger and it downloads to PC.

I got the Fujifilm FinePix S602Zoom. I really like it. Good camera for the money.

How much are you willing to spend?
What types of photos do you expect to take?
Don't forget the tripod, extra memory, extra charger and batteries, lens filters.

Swoop - seeing as you're in Britain, I'll share a titbit about the purchase... BTW can never remember if you're Dowding's brother, or if that's swoopy.

I got my Olympus C920 1.3 megapixel about three years ago at Dixons in LA.  (Luton Airport). Dixons has a store there after you've passed Customs on your outbound flight, so anything you buy is deemed to be for export - duty free price. I paid £254 for mine at a time when it was £400 in the shops. So if you're planning a big purchase, window shop in the high street, then go on a jaunt somewhere warm and sunny with easyJet, and buy your camera at the airport at the duty free price. UK warranty, so none of the usual hassles about buying something expensive abroad.

or just go to Wall mart, costco, Sams Club, staples or any of a dozen other discount stores that offer a money back price matching policy.
