iMac to PC file transfer help?

I have a good friend that was running an iMac and bought a good PC.

The problem is that he's "having a HUGE problem trying to get my new microsoft one to read floppies from my imac!".

Any tips for the best way to do a file transfer? I don't think they've got a CD burner but I was thinking maybe a USB burner that would work with both machines. Do they even make them? Wouldn't want it to be worthless after the transfer. Is there a way to link the computers directly?

I don't know much about PC's and less about iMacs.

Any help appreciated!

plug both into your network.

enable SFM (services for macintosh) on the Windows machine.  Search under help to figure this out.  (edit:  its called macfile in XP)

enable appletalk on the Mac and setup file sharing.


The mac should now be accessible through the explorer.

Have fun putting in the file extensions.  If you have a buttload of files you might try something such as Mac Rename.

what version of MacOS?  If it's OS X you have many ways to do this.  You can connect them directly using cross-over ethernet cable or via a hub.  In OS X, FTP is built in along with a Samba client.  10.2 has Samba server built in so Windows will see the machine as another Windows file sharing machine.  Just enable "Windows file sharing" in the Services system preferences.

You could also buy MacOpener and open the files on a Mac-formatted disk on the PC.

Maybe it's an older iMac running OS 8 or 9... in that case just format the floppy on the Mac as DOS.  Then save files to the floppy.  That would probably be the easiest way to transfer the files to be honest.

Another approach is to use PC formatted floppies to save the iMac files. All iMacs (at least pre- OSX) could read/write PC formatted floppies but no PC can read MacOS formatted floppies.
Low tech sneakernet but probably effective for what you need.

get the free software (30 day demo) of PCMACLAN
it'll let you transfer files back and forth freely.
