Why Sicily is both the best and worst CT map:
« on: May 10, 2003, 10:01:35 PM »
Its the best when a Malta base gets captured and there's lots of fast intense action.  It also can be pretty good when 7, 8, 9, or 10 gets captured.  Those bases are pretty close as well.

Other than that, it can kinda suck.  I hate the long drive to Malta.

yeah.  I was squeaking about this too.  I was hoping the squeaking would convince the LW to just fight instead of trying to take 11 and sink C60.  we had some good fights before that happened.   Even Eagler got to get me once.  ;)

How the hell do ya beat the Spit 9 in the 190 a5 or 109 G2?

I'm taking a real beating in the CT from the spits.  LW iron not that much faster and definately will not turn with spit.

Any suggestions on how to fly these planes effectively against Spits?

The Spit IX is a Hi Alt fighter - get it down on the deck and you can skin it with the 109F & G2.

The 190 is not a turnfighter. Zoom and boom with it. Long flat fireing passes. If you miss keep hauling and set up for another pass.

The Spit V, Seafire & Hurricane are far more dangerous.

ALTITUDE IS LIFE: if you are going to get up high and swing with the "Alt Monkeys" be sure you are higher than they are. Take the time to get some alt before you commit to battle. Then Boom & Zoom them. Always keep your alt above them.

RULE OF 45: If you do get in a dogfight always remember the "Rule of 45." Never turn past 45 deg. in a turning fight. If you haven't got the position for a gun shot by then you are not going to get it and are just digging yourself in deeper. Disengage or manuver for another shot.

WINGMAN: If your not flying with a wingman you asking for it. Two pilots working together even with inferior planes can almost always defeat a superior pilot with a superior plane.

The Fw190A-5 is about 20mph faster than the Spit9 from 0~5k.

The gap starts to close from 5k to 10k.

Between 10~15k, the speed of the two planes are almost identical - both in WEP and MIL power.

Over 15k, gap starts to part, again the Fw190A-5 being faster, and from 20~25k, again, the '20mph marging' shows and fades.

At 25k, the speed is once again equal, and above that the Spit9 becomes faster. I think it's safe to say the Fw190A-5 is comfortably faster than the Spit9 at all practical altitudes.

 ...

But the problem is low acceleration and bad maneuverability of the 190 is like a saving grace for the Spit9. Whatever advantage in speed energy, is usually neutralized due to poor maneuverability.

In a 1vs1, I wouldn't bet on the Fw190A-5 pilot... but if it is a pack vs pack.. I think the Fw190s would have an advantage.

Tried the 109F last nite and had much better results against the spits.  I was able to give two spits a lot of trouble and pinged one of em up real good before his buddy nailed me.

The 109F will almost turn with the spit9, but not as good in the verticle.

1v1, no plane in the CT can take on a Spit 9.  That said, a good pilot in one of the other planes has about a 50% chance of killing a bad pilot in a Spit 9.  The other half the time, they'll get a ping on you with the Hizooka and end the fight right at the beginning.

On the deck, the 190a5 and the Spit IX have identical acceleration in level flight.  In a dive, I think the Spit accelerates much much better.  The 109's accelerate better, but good luck extending away from a Spit IX before he lands the one hit he needs to knock your tail off.  Turn rate obviously goes to the Spit IX, as does vertical performance (go ahead and try to rope a Spit IX going the same speed as you in any prop plane).  Roll rate goes to the 190, then the spit, with the 109s being pathetic in that department.  Firepower isnt even close, the Spit IX can deal a lot more damage a lot easier than any of the Axis planes.

Your only real 'chance' to kill a good pilot in a Spit 9 is to bore and zoom.. climb to 25k and pray you don't meet a spit within 2-3k of your altititude, because he'll eat you alive.  If you have a 10,000 foot alt cushion, you can Bore and Zoom in a 190a5 until the Spit gets tired and flies back home or runs out of gas.  Or you can 'turnfight' with them and if you are an extraordinary pilot you'll win about 50% of the fights.  You'll be able to kill the really horrible spit pilots in anything, but as long as they know to keep turning hard in one direction you'll probably have a tough time.

Very true comments Urchin.

As always, it's the man, not the machine.  I know I'm in trouble in my 109G-2 if the person I'm diving on fish-barrols me (turn hard one way and as I overshoot, quickly turn back and snapshoot).

The 109G-2 accelerates about 15% better but in dogfight, I wouldn't try to outrun a Spit 9.  With 50% fuel, the G-2 is an excellent turn fighter (not better).  I take a drop-tank and go toe to toe with any Spit IX I come across and usually come out on top.

That being said,  you got to live with the smell of the Spit 9 if you decide to fly it. Real pilots don' t stink. :D

With all do respect to Comrad Fork I dont realy agree with the term it's the man not the machine, it may be a matter of semantics but I have always felt it is the Machine, it dictates policy, it determins what you can and cant do and if you dont know, you will learn, or burn out trying.
On papper this set up has the Germans at a preformance advantage, which is lessened by the reality of AH and the spit's preformance per Urchins prety much bang on discription above. I beleave that this set up by Jester is a very good one howeaver, while it is easer for the Allies to be suxcesfull in the dweaby Spit's generaly speaking, if the Axis use thier heads they can be as suxcessfull.

Against the Spit IX, I do ok in using the 109F or the G2 although using completely different tactics.  It helps a great deal to have help.  Group tactics work well for the LW planes because they rely on speed while the Spits turn.  If a group of LW can get a group of Spits low and turning constantly and looping while the LW planes BnZ keeping a hefty speed ad, the LW do quite well.  It's the 1v1 situations that really hurt the LW.

Against the Spit V, I like the 190 A5.  109F4 is not that much faster than Spit V and can't come close to turning with it.

Last nite, I and two of my squad mates did fairly well flying A5's against Spit V's in group situations south of A6.

I had begun trying out Spit 9's in the main, but quit because of that slimy feel.  I only fly axis in the or Rusky, I love the Yak9U.
