Yesterday I had a bit time left for flying. Last flight of the day was when I saw a lone red dot approach a base some sectors behind the front line. I figured that it probably was a high formation of buffs and took up a G-10. Forgot my gondolas though in the haste. Took off and saw a high dot. Climbed a bit on WEP and soon saw that it was a fellow Bish, a guy called Toad. Then I saw the bandits, a formation of B-17's very low, approaching the field. I figured that Toad was in a much better position but he called something over the radio that sounded like 'I let you shoot them down'. Well thanks!
Cautiously I stalked him and could manage a good pass from 3 o'clock hitting the lead ship. No return fire but also no obvious damage to the B-17. But what happened next I still don't understand. This guy actually LANDED his formation just short of the field and was just sitting there with three B-17's. He didn't end his flight or anything, he just sat there. Wellll, I might not be the greatest shot of all but this was too easy. Three B-17 kills with 14 rounds of 30mm left. But the question remains WHY???
Why didn't he bail or ditch, why didn't he carry on regardless to the field (he would easily have made it with all three bombers, unless he was out of fuel), why didn't he evade or shoot back?
I can only guess that he was a clueless newbie but he must have flown a looong way and managed to land too.
So first someone gives away a fine target (thank you) and then the target presents itself on a silver platter... well, good for my stats but not for much else.
