I havent DLed the 500 MB trailer yet (500MB!?!?!?) but Ill get around to it sooner or later.  I can honestly say this is one of the only games Im getting excited about.

The engine is supposedly spectacular, yet will still run on low end systems (just like HL years ago) and moddability is apparently pretty good (anyone else notice that the domain http://www.dayofdefeat2.com has already been bought by Valve?  I bet the DoD team is already working on porting the game over to the new engine... drool...)

The first HL I would rank in the top 3 games of all time, and I dont see how HL2 will be any different - should be a good trip.

That video was awesome. I think HL2 is gonna bury DOOM3. It didnt look like a game, rather one of those animiated movies like "Finding Nemo".  Guess we should start saving our pennies for Sept. upgrades.

I dunno if HL2 will beat D3 in the sales figures initially, but it will be close.  I figure if your an FPS guy, both games are "the ones to own" in the next few months.

If youre a "regular gamer" type, youll spring for Doom3 over some weird, glasses wearing scientist, shoot aliens type, Id imagine.

The staying power is where HL2 will reign.  Once people start pumping out mods, we'll see the whole CounterStrike/Firearms/DoD thing all over again... the id games are supposedly pretty hard to mod, so HL has the advantage in this area and its why people will still walk into EB and pick up a copy of the original Half Life just so they can play the third party games.

How many other games are still on the shelves - and selling - YEARS after their release?

HL is good... but really... its all just improvements on a theme.

Doom/Quake/Wolfenstein

Change the story a bit... add new textures... change the engine around.

The concept is still the same.

Making something better than something that was revolutionary does not necessarily make it revolutionary too.

did you play it? it was very diferent, it felt like you were in a movie, had a real story.. UNLIKE doom/quake/etcera. they were just get to the end of the level and kill the boss.

Yes I played it... all the way through... and adding a story between fps sessions does not make the game.  It enhances it, sure, but it does not make it.  It is a spectacular game, but still based on the same theme FPS of old.

I've been downloading for the last 4 hours!  Can't find a fast link at all.

Whats this new bitTorrent crap for large downloads?  Some sort of file-sharing thingy?  I have seen on various message boards: "anyone have a torrent for this?"

Oct, mine had sound (got it from FilePlanet).

And yes... the physics are insane.  What your missing without sound is the managing director (of Valve I think... maybe Sierra) explaining whats happing.

The few minutes are obviously to show off the Source engine.  Some really mpressive stuff - the "deformable environment" that people have been claiming is in their product for years ACTUALLY is this time around!

The textures, camera, deformable terrain, water effects, and the fact that everything behaves exactly like its real life counterpart is amazing.  Shoot a piece of wood, it breaks, some flies into the water, it floats.  Shoot a barrel, it rolls, falls into the water and sinks.

Anyway - there are some great "techie" wizecracks from people in the background during the footage (which is taken from E3).  At some point, when the guy is explaing the engine, and showing the mattress, wood, and barrels near the "pool" some guy opens up and says "And this will run on my 486?"  Even I snickered at that one.

:D
