Hardware Sound Accelleration
« on: May 23, 2003, 03:19:57 PM »
What is the bug in AH that forces the reduction of the "Sound Hardware Accelleration" setting?  I find this a very poor "fix" because this reduces the functionality of the hardware in my system.  When you reduce this setting things like EAX Environmental sound no longer work.  Other games do not seem to have an issue with this setting, why does AH?  Doesn't AH use DIRECTX to access the hardware?  Shouldn't this be a standard way to access the sound sub-system?  From my point of view, it seems like a memory leak or resource issue with AH, because the longer you play AH without rebooting, the worse the problems seem to get when concerning sound and AH performance....

(My problem is after playing AH for about an hour, I start getting frame stutters and pauses when certain sound activites occur.  ie. firing the guns, opening a sound channel to transmit, or bombs exploding.  The only way to fix this is to quit AH and reboot.)

At least this is an end user perception (Myself being the end-user...).

It's usually dependent on what kind of sound card you have.  A lot of times those that have to lower their sound card acceleration by one notch are those that are using either an onboard sound card or a Creative sound card.

When I had both onboard sound and then later a Creative sound card, I had some stuttering problems with I would fire and at times my sounds would stop.  Lowering the sound acceleration worked for me but later when I bought a different sound card to replace my Creative Extigy, I raised the sound acceleration back to full and haven't had a problem with my sound.

BTW- AH if I recall doesn't support EAX sound, so that might be your problem.
