Total Lockup
« on: June 13, 2003, 11:42:17 PM »
I see that people are having CTD problems.  I am having TLP (TOTAL LOCKUP PROBLEMS).  Lately, nearly every time I try to play in CT... I fly for a bit, then WHAMMMM...Total lock up.  Alt-Cntr-Del does not work, Alt-Tab does not work.  Only turning off the computer and restarting clears it.   I have gone to Event viewer and found that my firewall was causing a problem each time.  I was using ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm.  I deleted ZoneAlarm and installed Kerio Personal Firewall.  The problem seemed to go away for a time.  A few weeks later, WHAMMM...same thing.  I go to event viewer and there are no problems listed.

I am running Windows XP on a Gateway 1.4GHz Pentium 4 with 512 Megs Ram, Sound Blaster Live, nVidia Ti 4200 with 128 mb.

HELP!!! Any Ideas?

Have you updated all your drivers for sound and video card? if so, you might check and make sure your system isn't running hot if that doesn't work, try removing a stick of memory (if you have more than 1) and keep doing that and see if the problem goes away, if it does you have a bad stick of memory.

I went in and reduced my sound acceleration from max by 1 notch.  Haven't had a lockup in last 1/2 hour.  Maybe that was it...I'll let you know.   Thanks.

Well,  I played for about 1 hour and it locked up again.  I only have 2 sticks of RAM and they must be put in pairs so I cannot remove one.

I don't think that is the problem since it only happens in AH.  What now?

If you have 2 that means that they are 256 meg's a piece, I recently had a bad stick of memory giving me that same problem. For example, your two sticks of memory, let's say stick A and stick B..Remove 1 stick of either, doesn't matter at this point. Then go back in and try and play again if it does the same thing, then go back and put in the other stick that will rule out the memory problem, if that doesn't fix it the other possiblity would be heat, if you have some kind of pc health thing that you can monitor from windows good.. If not, you will have to go into the BIOS and see what the temperature is on my P4 it stays at a temp of 43 degrees C. if it looks like it may be a little high, take the case off and try and run it again.

thats only on really old PC's with SIMM's (Single Inline Memory Modules) if your PC is that old (i think Pentium 250mhz was the last supported processer on motherboards with SIMM's) it's time to upgrade.

if you have PC100 (or higher like PC133 or DDR) memory they dont need to be in pairs.
I don't know what to put here yet.

rdram, or rimms is one of the best setups for the p4,, the new dual-channel 400mhz modules for the p4 (800mhz) could be better. Havn't seen any matchups between rdram and the new ddr setups.

Check your temperatures. Try running with the case side off.
