which is better?
« on: May 28, 2003, 01:10:52 PM »
COD I HATE COMPUTERS!!! :D  No sooner do you buy something, its obsolete.

I've finally made my decision for my upgrade.  I set the $ cap at 400 clams.  My shopping list includeds.....

1 - ABIT nForce2 BIOS (Deluxe) Survival Kit for NF7 v2.0 Series
2 - Crucial Micron Original PC2700 333Mhz DDR 256MB 32X64
1 - ABIT NF7-S V2.0 Motherboard
1 - AMD Athlon XP2600+ 2.08GHZ 256K 333MHz T/BRED Processor
1 - ABIT Siluro Geforce FX5200 DT 128M TV/DVI Retail

Subtotal: $394.99  :D

Can someone explain to me the difference bewteen the GF4 TI cards and the new FX series cards.  I looked at Toms hardware and from what I read, the FX series cards are better.  However, what confuses me is why the TI series cards are more expensive.

Any help is appreciated

The Ti4600 is faster than the FX5200 by a long shot and that is why they cost more.

The FX5200 is about like a GF2 Ultra in performance with new features for supporting DX9.  Well,..it may be a bit faster than a GF2 Ultra, but not by much and definately not faster than a Ti4600.

Some guy bought a 5200 to replace a 440MX card, and was a bit upset at how much slower the card was than the 440MX.

GforceFX 5200 NON ULTRA like the one you have listed is no faster that a GF4MX a GFX 5200ULTRA is as fast as a GF4Ti4200, which can be purchased for $90-120 depending on manufacturer and how much ram 128MBvs64MB.  I would go with a Ti4200 or a radeon 9500pro or non pro.  You will save yourself some money by getting an EPOX 8rda+ board as opposed to that ABIT, but really unless you plan on overclocking the ABIT seems to be a tad bit better at it, also do you REALLY need serial ATA it is marginally faster the drives cost a sheot ton more.  With that being said the only difference between the EPOX and the ABIT is serial ATA and a huge price difference.  Also cruical memory had some issues with nforce2 boards that i do not know if they got straightened out, I would go with Kingston HYPERX, also if your gonna get a XP2600 I would suggest saving money and getting a 2500 "barton" which has a larger on die cache, it will outperform that 2600 and is cheaper.

Hey Pfunk :D

I think we had a lengthy conversation on this before a couple of weeks back :D.  I read the the Nforce MB had problems with the hyperx memory, specifically the ABIT board which is why I picked the Crucial memory over the Kingston.

IIRC, you are running the EPOX board with the hyperx in without any problems.  The only reason why I stayed with the Abit board is that is what I'm currently running and it has worked flawlessly for 3+ years.  Gotta stick with what ya know :)

I have to imagine this will be enuf horsepower to run AH2

So, I'll take your advice and place the order at Newegg today.    The only problem now is what new video game to buy....  Damn computers...  If this setup doesn't work, I'm gonna ship you my first born :D  That'll fix ya :D :D  j/k

To all, a big for the help!

Hmm I never heard of any problems with EPOX or any other nforce2 chipset board having problems with the HyperX, I do know that lots of folks had problems with Corsair XMS and many of the guys over at amdforums picked up the HyperX and were more than pleased with its performance.  I think I remember Bloom saying that the Crucial problems had been fixed, but I am not 100% sure on that.  Either way the EPOX and ABIT boards are two VERY good mobo's, that along with the barton processor and the ATI 9500 and you will have one smoking system.  You should be able to run AH at the highest vid settings with some AA on to boot :)

Hey Box -

Is this the stuff you are talking about?

KINGSTON KVR400X64C25/256 256MB 400MHz DDR PC3200 DIMM RAM CL2.5

As for another question....

Can I just put all this new stuff in the case and let win98 autodetect it or do I need to format my OS partition and reinstall the OS from scratch?

Win98 has a horrible time trying to find new drivers etc, especially since you are using a mobo with an entirely different chipset.  Just reformat, it might take longer but it will make life oh so much easier.

If possible you should also re partition your drive to include a system or backup partition if you only have a single drive...

This will allow you to move the win98 folder and whatever alse you need drivers etc to that partition.  The benefits of this setup is that you no longer need to install from a compact disk... the second is that any word files or *.pst excel etc... could be transfered to the backup boot partition for safekeeping...  Also if your system ever nerfs..., you can get up and running very quickly...

Note you are using win98, believe it or not its a great OS when set up right...

when i install win98 for the first time i copy the whole root directory in this case most likely C:\   to a folder called base install (use any name you like) right after i get my video and sound card drivers installed...

be shure you have show all files checked so you can see your autoexec.bat etc...

the benefit of doing it like this is that when your system nerfs you just copy that backup with all information to your c:\ and walaa instant restore without even reinstalling...

a few program installs and your up and running in like 10 mins total.....  beats the hell out of ghost or any other backup programs its a no brainer...

now win2k xp etc  linux Unix bsd multiboots better use Ghost...

just a few tips hope they help...

PS: Pfunk was right win 98 doesn't do too well when you change 50% of the hardware or more.. you should reinstall for shure....

Thanks for the help guys...  I was hoping I could get around not reformating, but oh well, its not like its the first time :D

I do have a 60 GB drive partitioned into 3 drives.  OS in on the C: applications on the D: and games on the E:

Is there anyway to keep from having to reinstall all the applications on the other drives after the OS is redone?  (i.e. get the applications/games put back into the registry)

I know about the ability to export the registry and then import it back, but that would bring back all the hardware information as well correct?

I would suggest against importing a registry..  yes it can be done but it would become extremely tedious and take i bet twice as long as just installing the programs over...

If your looking just to save the settings in such programs then you can just back up the program files and put them in the proper directories on the new system..  then reinstall over them... and most likely all you preferences should hold depending on the reinstall sequence of the installer..

If its a 16 bit or dos programs you are trying to replace you can without a problem...

but most programs these days are 32 bit which require registry entries.

exp aces high...  you can move the whole directory... and it works...  while MS office will nerf out on you...
