I think you're missing Bodhi's point Hawk. He wasn't advocating the government taking them away...he was referring to them loosing their fan base and going the way of 80s hair bands.

I can't believe some people's lives are so incredibly shallow that they care even a little bit about a squable between these performers. Just like tv news faces, they're just entertainers. If you are entertained, pay up. If not, move along.

all of which should show responsibility..
or at least be ready to deal with consequences of their actions.

I for one, am not saying they should or should not have said something.. it's their choice. But they shouldn't whine when the consequences of their choice(s) cause them to lose fans/money.

Same goes for anyone that want's to have 'free speech' without consequences.. it's idiotic to think like that.

Very few things are as polarizing as politics.

The point is that as a public figure you can't expect to stand up and use your fame and notoriety to make that political statement and then whine and cry when it polarizes many people against you.

People aren't saying that they don't have the right to make thier statements. They are saying that if the Dixie Chix want to make those statements they also have the right to make a statemnet againt them.

So how is that any different? The Dixie Chix made a statement against a very popular leader. He may not be popular with you but he is popular none the less. Just like Clinton wasn't popular with me but he was popular with many other people.

Still the Dixie Chix made a statement and Texans, Country Music fans, and many Americans in general are making a statement.

So what are you saying? The Dixie Chix should be allowed to make that statement and if many Americans found offensive and in bad taste we cannot make a statement of our own?
