Logitech stick question
« on: June 06, 2003, 05:05:43 AM »
Yeah, I know, they catch a lot of flak, but it's all I've got for now.  I have the Logitech Wingman Extreme, and it worked alright for me for about 2 years, but for the last couple months it's had a problem that's been getting worse.

The rudder input spikes.  From what I understand, this is a fairly common problem with these sticks.  I'm just wondering if anyone knows a good way (short of getting a new stick) to deal with this.

To be more detailed, the twisty-stick rudder input will occaisionally (and getting more frequent) shoot all the way to one side, and most of the time when I throw in opposite rudder to move it back to center, I get the "Do not move your controls so rapidly" message and then can't make any inputs for a few seconds.  This tends to be annoying when it happens in a fight or when making a jabo run.  Also, it doesn't hold center very well once it goes back.  If I put in full left deflection, and then release, the ball does not go right back to center, it hangs a little to the left.  Same thing on the right.

I have tried recalibrating both in the Control Panel and in the game, and sometimes that will help for a couple days, but the problem always comes back in short order.

I'm building a new computer in a few months and I'll get a new stick then, but I'd like to make this one last at least a couple more months.

I have the same stick and problem. Was never able to sort it out. But you can disable the rudder. Limits your control a bit but is flyable. Go to your stick set up from the clipbaord, and move the sliders for "rudder" all the way to the bottom (all 10 of them), then move the deadband and dampening all the way to the top. It effectively disables your rudders and they will stay centered.
It is too bad about the problems with the logitech stick, I really do like how it feels, and its button layout. But only getting 3 to 4 months out of it sucks. Had 3 and always the same problems. Time for a new type.
cheers

Get foot pedals and disable the rudder.
