Marlboro miles
« on: June 11, 2003, 04:21:54 PM »
Well yesterday I went out and ran 4 miles in 30 minutes. That is an average of 7.5 per mile and I always have enough for 1 more mile before I drop dead or collapse. Not bad for an older fella huh (and I smoke too). Well I havent run since late last year and it was my seventh time out to the track again in the span of three weeks. Its great, running is really good for your health. Im hoping for five miles again for a good running routine. Any other runners around?

i ride a bicycle, easier on my old knees than running, but get rid of the cigs, they really hurt your performance, i stopped smoking in 1980. i'll never go back.

I started swimming last November. I can do 70 lengths of a 25 meter pool per half hour. That is just over a mile.

I ran about 3 miles every other day up until my first son was born (7 years ago) then my knees started taking a toll...I do alot of mountain biking in the summer (we live near Victor Falls for anyone that lives in this area, excellent mtn. bike trails) and do the stationary bike at the gym now.

Knees are a terrible thing to waste.

>but get rid of the cigs

Im trying to but its very hard. These days I only enjoy 10% of the ciggaretes I smoke, the rest is to satisfy the nicotine craving. I notice that when Im healthy I smoke less because after I smoke a ciggerete I feel like sh*t again.

Senna... pack up the jogging shoes!!  ride a bike man...

Seriously, your knees will thank you.

Or you can expect replacement surgery down the road.

My knees are still good.

Swimming is great during the summer months.

Ran 7.5 miles in about 55 mins 2 weeks ago. I typically run 4 miles 3 times a week. I'm not a speedster, usually only aim for 7 minute miles or so. Been running this way for about 16 years, knees still good. Key is changing your running shoes very frequently.  I do the mountain biking thing occasionally, but it's just quicker and more convenient to go for a 30 minute run.

Could someone remind me how Jim Fix died?
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

My dad has always been a pretty serious walker and cyclist.  Though the cycling he only really got serious about, 10-12 yrs ago.  When he goes for a walk though... 5 miles is just a quick hop for him.

He's had surgery on one knee, just to delay the inevitable, I think he's been told it will probably need to be replaced within 10 years.  He's 58.

Fixx died of hereditary heart problems.  Running prolonged his life, not shortened it.

<---- read the ID.

During the Summer I slack off my running and play beach volleyball.  Volleyball is harder on my knees than any other sport I do.  At least with running I can use a grass course.

You do know that smoking causes an increase in carbon monoxide in your blood stream, right?  Patrick Swayze was learning to fly and blacked out in the cockpit.  His chain-smoking and the high altitude caused an oxygen depletion situation in his blood stream.

That's about my schedule during the Summer.  I don't really do any races other than a 4th of July 5k during the hot months.  I go through 2 or 3 pairs of shoes a year, but alternate pairs and alternate running surfaces weekly.  I usually use my new shoes on concrete, old ones on grass, older ones on mud.

The farthest race I've done is a 15k.  My favorite distance is the 10k because its long enough to feel like a special event, but short enough that I'm not exhausted for the rest of the day.
