Torch Fight Frame 2 Summary

Dateline Tunisia
Frame 2 Torch Fight

In Frame 2, the British shifted the weight of their operations to the north coast of Tunisia around Bizerte in the hopes of knocking out the port and airbase there to prepare the way for an invasion. Unfortunately, for them, their TBM bombers got way ahead of their Seafire escorts and paid the price in a big way. None of them made it to the target. The Luftwaffe had a feast. The Seafires did well against a mixed lot of 109s and 190s, but could not provide protection for the TBMs from behind, nor apparently could they protect their carrier. Fortunately for the British a second strike force of Marauders escorted by Spitfire IXs managed to do some damage to the airbase and the nearby vehicle assembly areas. But, the overall effect was much less than was desired, and the Marauders paid heavily in losses.

The Americans in the center of Tunisia have still not managed a significant damaging raid on the airfield at Youks-les-Bains. There was heavy action with A-36A Apache fighter-bombers making a significant appearance in theatre. They did some damage to ground forces, but a lot more damage to the LW. The American bombing force of A-20s was not able to penetrate the LW aircover to inflict much damage as well. Overall damage was light, the Germans are still able to use this most important base. Hitler was reported to have chuckled over Field Marshall Kesselring’s report on the days activities. This inability to neutralize the Luftwaffe in the center is frustrating General Patton, if his armour is to have a significant effect in the battle for Tunisia, it will have to roll with the specter of having as many Germans overhead as Americans. He was heard to mutter “let the bastards die for their country”. It was not clear who he was talking about.

Overall, the Germans, despite having a mixed bag of old and new aircraft, have come off fairly well considering their situation. Their  raid on the British aircraft carrier came off well especially following their slaughter of the TBMs. The British in the north have spent their bomber force and their carrier to no effect, and the Americans are faced with a bad situation having to consider armoured operations facing significant German aerial activity. The Germans also have the advantage of being on the defensive with interior lines of communication, with relatively short flights to the front, while the Allies have been hampered by relatively long flights.

"What to do? What to do?" AVM Tedder asks General LeClerc and Field Marshall Montgomery.

I thought the MAW sank the Britsh carrier. As a matter of fact i watch the carrier and cruiser both go to the bottom in a devistating bomber raid made by the Maw.
So please explain to me how the carrier raid didnt come off well:confused:

thanx

Sorry Joker, as I wasn't there I couldn't find anyone to tell me if it happened. I made an assumption that wasn't correct. I have amended my summary. Unfortunately the sinking of the CV isn't listed in the logs (at least I couldn't find it).

In that case this simply bolsters my point that the British in the north of Tunisia are in a bad way, as their main carrier is on the bottom.

As one of the many units assigned to CAP in the northern sector, the Shills had some trouble getting up and into position. Due to map restrictions, Rip was forced to change our starting field several times, and as a result we found ourselves upping significantly further to the south than planned. Rip had tasked me to lead the northern flight, but I have to admit I really didn’t take much of a leadership role.

We were climbing out to the north in a formation of four with two stragglers. Because I’m paranoid, and am always moving around to check blind spots, I have a tendency to fall behind my own formations during climb out. So the Shills were in the middle of trying to form up when we had first contact with the enemy. There were two spitfires a bit below us, which appeared to be scouts for the incoming attack. Since I was one of only two planes in position to make an attack on these fighters, I ordered my wingman GoFaster to engage one, while I engaged the other. At the very least we wanted to take them down, and keep them out of the fight. I ordered the rest of the squad to stay high, and keep an eye out for the actual attack. Perhaps I should have released the squad COs to freelance, but I was confident that everyone already was lol. Squad structures being what they are, I think it’s more efficient to allow for this anyhow, so long as you can maintain full coverage of your mission objectives. But I digress...

I GoFaster and I tangled with the Spits for a few minutes, but both disengaged from the stalemate before we wound up on the deck and out of E. During the Melee however, we became separated. He managed to pick up on the TBM raid, while I made it back to A-20 in time to chase off the B-26s. I made several passes, however from a disadvantageous position (low 6) I broke off before suffering any real damage. I pinged up a drone pretty well, but did not manage to bring anything down.

By this time, we had lost two of our planes. The other four of us regrouped at A35, and continued our patrolling. We lost Runny when he tried a hi-speed strafing attack on a US bomber. Sometimes I think that if only I had followed him in, my friend would still be here today. Then I drink a liter of schnapps, and the pain is somewhat deadened. Then I vomit, and the pain is back again. KBall and I managed to find a lone B-26 over our territory, and Kball downed it. While re-arming after that sortie, I snapped my wing on the outhouse, and was forced to call it a night. By that time, there wasn’t much fight left in the Allies.
