Competition between squadrons
« on: June 18, 2003, 08:57:46 PM »
Well we have come up with an idea for a little inter-squadron competition. Our new XO (Arlo) sent me a picture and said something about it a few months back that has just lingered on with me. All squadrons are invited to take part even though we do give bonus points for landing your planes on CV's.

So here is the Competition layout. We need 10 squadrons to fill the slots. If you want to take part please post here or contact me via email. Once we have the slots filled you will be contacted about the start date.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Battle “E” Competition Outline

1. Air-to-Air Component: This component will show competency in both individual and wingman tactics for the entire squadron.
a. Composed of both a 1 vs. 1 and a 2 vs. 2 components run in two stages. The total number of each squadron who will take part in this Component will be 6 pilots per squadron. This will show both competency and training for the squadron in BFM and ACM as a single aircraft and wingman scenario. If you fly the 1 vs. 1 part for your squadron you may not fly in the 2 vs. 2 sections. This will make squadrons choose from among all their pilots and not just the top tier.
b. You are also graded on your landing back at the carrier by an independent LSO.  Bonus points will be awarded for landing skill and these points will count toward the final score for the squadron. Please see section 2 e. for landing clarification.
c. All flights will be filmed and film will be submitted to the competition organizers. If there is a dispute then squadrons involved will each receive film from the other squadron to help settle the dispute. If no resolution can be finalized then the two squadrons will loose their points and drop to the bottom of the rankings for that section and component.
d. Winning squadron receives 30 points with a graduated scale down to 5 points for last place in the Component.

2. *Air-to-Ground Component: You will be graded on your ability to hit targets accurately in this phase.
a. Ability to drop 2k bombs onto an enemy hangar (Live AA fire), closest to the hangar wins this competition.  One pass, salvo 2.
b. Ability to kill 4 AA with rockets (Salvo 2, total of 8 rockets) on a hostile field and living.
c. Ability to return from your A2G portion of the Component, catching the 5th wire (Considered the best wire on a wooden 12 wire 1940's CV deck) would be considered "perfect" for this phase.
d. All participants will have a CO or XO of competing squadrons join them in-flight to "observe" and film. Two flyers will be in the air at one time, picking two different hangars on the field (If you guys are smart, you'll go "IN" simultaneously so as to distract the AA).
e. All flights will be filmed and film will be submitted to the competition organizers. If there is a dispute then squadrons involved will each receive film from the other squadron to help settle the dispute. If no resolution can be finalized then the two squadrons will loose their points and drop to the bottom of the rankings for that section and component.

3. Squadron vs. Squadron Component: Pretty self-explanatory. We will have a face off of equal numbers of pilots for each squadron.
a. The first squadron to win their section will move on in a “1 and done” format to find the winning squadron in this component.
b. Each squadron will have the opportunity to pick their aircraft of choice and there will be no disclosure between the squadrons.
c. The only flight rule in this competition is that you cannot “vulch” an enemy who is landing a damaged fighter. The pilot who does will automatically cost his squadron 15 points off their point total for each aircraft downed in this fashion.

I'm sure you know the 13th would be interested.  My one question is plane types.  You USN dweebs I assume will want to fly hogs and hellcats while we would take A6M5b's.  But to make it a fair comp, you have to fly same aircraft.  What's you're solution?

Not a problem really. I put this out as a beginning and if squadrons other than USN/USMC are interested we can adjust the rules and competition to be fair to all involved.

I did not modify the A2G phase very much as it was something I borrowed from the VMF-323 website. I was thinking of eliminating the rocket phase and having just a bombing competition for closest to the target. As it mentions in the A2G component..."a. Ability to drop 2k bombs onto an enemy hangar (Live AA fire), closest to the hangar wins this competition. One pass, salvo 2." There are no points for bringing the structure down with your bombs. That is just icing on the cake if you can do it. With that in mind I was thinking of using the map room as the target of choice since you can't destroy it at all no matter how much you bang on it.
