He's dead because he didn't look back? No way...He was alive, riding off for his next conquest.

 Now I remember my Pa tellin me all bout Grandpa doing this here same thing all the time and it seems he'd set out fer Kansas City and wake in St Louis.

The Negotiator aside (talk about your obscure references), and not having read the book, I always thought he was alive. After reading this thread on IMDB I think they left it as a sort of cliffhanger for a possible sequel.
