Dead at too young an age. Herb Brooks who gave us all a thrill in 1980.

I'll never forget those games.  He was a quiet hero.

I will never, ever be confused with a hockey fan.  I consider that one game the greatest sports thrill of my life.  I still get choked up a bit when its brought up.   Herb.

For you youngsters, USA amateurs vs Soviet Union's professional hockey team ...Samson and Goliath meet. If that game didn't explain the psyche of "Americans" to the Soviets, then nothing did (or will for that matter).  This was just the beginning of the fall for the Soviet high command, then came Glasnost in 85', then the wall in 89'.

I'm sure Borado, even though he was a toddler if born, will be by later to explain why the Soviets lost.

But there wasn't the political aura or tension that surrounded this particular game...don't forget that we boycotted the summer games because of the invasion of the Soviets into Afghanistan (And Carter going public saying "Well, maybe we *do* need to spend more on Defense--late79/early 80)

I was 13 when it happened.  I watched every glorious second of that game.  My brothers thought I was wasting my time.  When Al Michaels said, "Do you believe in miracles?!?!"  I screamed like my head came off.  Even when the Rockets won NBA titles in '94 and '95 I didn't even get close to the euphoria I felt on that magical night in '80.  Rip, to me it went way beyond David and Goliath.  I just can't come up with a comparison that captures how I felt about it.

EDIT-Samson and Goliath.  :D
