I was wondering what is considered a good frame rate and does anyone have any ideas on how to improve it?

You might want to try asking this question in the Technical Support forum as I bet more people in there can help.

Typically, I think you could play with 25 frames/sec IF that is with a reasonable number of aircraft around.  Smoke/Clouds seem to be the biggest thing that impacts frames rates, though lots of airplanes, or ones with lots of shapes (Bombers) can also be a serious problem.  You can use CTRL-I to see what your current frame-rate is.  Once you are in the teens with frame-rates you are typically having problems.

To improve framerates most people will recommend better hardware (memory, CPU, especially videocard), which is obvious.  You can also turn down the detail level a bit (SHIFT-F1, SHIFT-F2, SHIFT-F3 will change that I think off the top of my head).  There could also be some tuning stuff you can try but I think the Technical Forum people could help you more than me.  I've also heard that matching your desktop resolution to your game resolution settings can help, though I've never tried that.  Not so sure about that last point.

Try the technical forum though, I bet you get lost of info from there.

Allso try setting Anti-Aliasing to 'let windows decide setting' or whatever it says, rather than 2x, 4x etc.
I found it improved FR by about 20fps by doing that, and cant say I've noticed any real differance in the appearance of the game otherwise.
You could allso try Cntrl C to turn 'clutter' off ....looks a bit more 'flat and lifeless' at low alt with it off, but it should pick up a couple of frames a sec.

Hope that helps.

PS, I get a solid 60 fps (max refresh rate of crappy old monitor) with a 32 meg GeForce 2 and an Athlon 1800 with 256meg of ram.

Right click desktop>properties>settings>advanced>GeForce2>additional properties   on mine.
It should be in there somewhere, have a look through the tabs, I believe it is differant for differant sorts of vid cards.

The cntrl C for clutter on/off is ingame.

I see a big difference in frame rates at different resolutions.

800x600 16 bit should give you the best frame rates overall.

You can set video settings when you first start Aces High, just click the video tab instead of online.
