- ON THIS DAY -

On July 11, 1979, the abandoned United States space station Skylab made a spectacular return to Earth, burning up in the atmosphere and showering debris over the Indian Ocean and Australia.

Little known factoitd:

The film of this event was used by HTC to model the gloriously flaming destruction sequence triggered whenever I fly and get shot down which is 99.9% of the time!

I remember doing a school report on SkyLab and how disappointed I was to learn that all of that technology ended up in pieces strewn across the Pacific and Australian dessert.  It was a pretty cool piece of space technology up there, the next step to life in space, sort of a vision of a future that hasn't quite come to fruition yet.
