Ja .... he thinks it's happening because you're spawning and backing up with your hook down. Forget that. I'd go with the throttle cal. Then ... when you land (throttle chopped) .... and come to a full stop ... raise hook if you plan to rearm. :D

jamusta, I'm not sure half these guys replying understand the situation that you're describing (half think you're talking about takeoff).  I have experienced the same thing that you have, and as far as I know it's been a glitch with CVs ever since they were introduced.  If you land and catch the very first wire, you're going to get slingshotted back into the ocean.  Really the only way to fix it is to land a little longer and catch a later wire.  Every so often it pops up in the Bug Report forum, and it never gets fixed, so I'm guessing that HT and Pyro don't think it's that big a deal.

I've been thrown off the back of the carrier many times when trying to land.   This usually occurs when I am damaged and have to come in fast.  But that shouldn't matter, real F4Us routinely landed at 130-150 knots.  I think the wires 'catapult' you backwards off the deck when you arent perpendicular to them.  I say this because I usually fall backwards and to the left off the cv.

On a different note, on American Movie Classics they showed an old movie with actual footage of SB2Cs taking off from a carrier deck, along with F6Fs.  The F6Fs were able to lift off before getting to the end of the deck, but all the SB2Cs 'fell' off the deck (like our F4U does).  They even showed one SB2C stall and crash into the water.

Do not use hook when landing. Use full flaps and carefully mannage throttle. Also it will help to set the frontal view to top/right position, this way even if you will not see deck, you will see the tower.

You can land almost anything this way.

Oh yeah, that has happened to me.  And like someone else mentioned, you stop,  get jerked sideways and straight off the side of the carrier.

Other times you get shot straight back like you said.

The best (and rarest) bug is after catching the wire you stop and then fly straight up. This happened to me about 2 weeks ago.

The approach and touch-down was perfect. Then bang! straight up off the deck and a sweet nose over onto the deck.  Had my squad CO on the island watching the whole thing.  Neither of us could figure it out.

Sounds like a hard bounce landing. I've had `em myself but I don't think it's a glitch. I've seen pics of WWII cv landings that were like that. :D

My pilot was wounded ... I was blacked out. And I was missing all my control surfaces and half a wing. And my virus scanner popped up a window. And I was guzzling a beer ... and eating ... and answering the ball and chain's questions that always require answering on takeoffs and landings ... and watching the interesting commercial on TV.

Yeah ....

Yeah ... that's it ...
