Mail Call on the History Channel ... hosted by R. Lee Ermy (in the picture). He's singing "This is my rifle ... as big as my gun!"

also known as the best damn show on television...but I digress the weapon in question would be a Stg 44 German assault rifle fromo WW2. The precursor to the AK-47 and various other Kalashnikov rifles we see all over the world today. If found in good condition the Stg 44 is worth many $$$$.

Also known as C.G. Haenel MP-43/ Mp-44 Stg.44 Sturmgewehr-44. During development it was known as MachinenPistole and only that because Hitler hated seeing anything other than SMG's. It was only changed to Sturmgewehr after Hitler's approval of the weapon. Total production numbers were in the 500,000 range throughout the time it was produced.

Caliber: 7.92x33 mm (7.92mm Kurz)
Action: Gas operated, tilting bolt
Overall length: 940 mm
Barrel length: 419 mm
Weigth: 5.22 kg
Rate of fire: 500 rounds per minute
Magazine capacity: 30 rounds
Buckshot
Reschke from March 2001 till tour 146
Founder and CO VF-17 Jolly Rogers September 2002 - December 2006

Reschke wins.
AK-47 was completely different mechanically from the MP44.  They do look kind of similar though.  And both fire a downsized rifle cartridge.

Yes, and in a History Channel inverview Kalashnikov himself was VERY upset when it was suggested the AK was dervied from the StG 44.

In any case, the StG44 is the precursor to all assault rifles.

Damn, in too late. Ak-47 is however similar in operation to the StG `43 which wasn`t produced much - too much labour required, StG `44 a.k.a. MP44 (because Hitler had dismissed the concept of a Sturmgewehr = Assault Rifle, the idiot, they renamed it a Submachine Gun = MaschinenPistole = MP) was built from uh, how do you call it, gestanzte Metallteile ? :D

the correct saying is..

'this is my rifle, this my gun.
this for fighting, this is for fun."

you need a visual to get the full effect, when you say "this is my gun"and "this is for fun" you grab your crotch.

Gestanzt Metallteile I believe would be 'punched metal'

I assume it refers to a Stamped Metal manufacture process.

The same process was used on the MG42 to increase production and reduce waste.

Not that the history channel is the be all and end all of historical sources, but they said the Allies thought the Germans had significant shortcomings when they saw the MG42 in comparision to the machined MG34. It was instead a significant improvement in the gun.

BTW It is a great show.  He set up a "squad" of watermelons on a hill and sprayed a whole magazine on full auto, blew all the watermelons into bits.  Man he hates those watermelons.  :)

I thought it went like this:

"This is my rifle" "and this is my gun"

"This one`s for killing" "and this one for fun"

BTW, thanks. Stamped metal parts. My grandma was assembling MG42s back then  just a 5 minutes drive from my home.
