Question for Self-employed AH'ers
« on: July 28, 2003, 04:02:08 PM »
Well, I've about had it working for politicians.  The current one that I work for has made two decisions that I've thought were very unethical in the last 3 years I've worked for him, but I let it slide.  However, he's just made a third one and it has about pushed me over the edge.  Two of the unethical decisions I've seen this guy make had me feeling sick to my stomach when I left work because of the callous disregard for the well being of the people of Florida...and this is one of them.  BTW, this guy is Republican, but I've worked for Dems too and quite honestly from the examples I've seen neither can claim ethical superiority.

Anyway, I've been offered the opportunity to buy into a business with ties to the aviation industry.  I've been through all the financial analysis and it seems viable.  I would take a hit in my expendable income (hopefully short term as I have ideas on how to grow the business), but at least I would be my own boss.  However, I'm concerned about health insurance, since I would have to provide that myself.  Before I go into researching that, I wanted to hear from some of the self-employed AH'ers out there to get some heath insurer recommendations and find out what they might be paying for an individual plan (I'm divorced, so I don't need a family plan).

Are you becoming a partner or a franchisee? If the former, you are definitely not your own boss; if the latter, you are at the mercy of both the market (because you've restricted yourself) and the franchiser.

Equal partner.  You are right...that's not perfectly my own boss, but it's better than being an employee.

I had blue cross blue sheild through the florida farm brueau for 3 years.

It was a PPO but I don't remeber what the coverage was. I know I didn't have dental, but my payments were only $70 a month.  It was actually cheaper and better then the insurance at my last job.

There is an old saying in Aviation...

"If want to make a million in aviation start with two."

     or

"If you want to make a small fortune in aviation start with a large one."

Be very critical of all expenses and transactions and dig deep into the books.

Good luck!!

You thought politics left a bad taste, just wait till you start dealing with the FAA. Shop around, you can find some decent health insurance for under $100 a month, but it will be mainly hospitalization, not office visits.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Crow,

Think long and hard before going into the aviation industry.  Right now it is still tough goiing, and if you plan, on breaking in with a new product, it better damn well be cheese hot, and if it fits the aircraft, your pockets better be deep to go through the FAA's approval process...

I am in aviation, and I can say this much, I love it, but I am not in it to make millions....

Nuff said...
I regret doing business with TD Computer Systems.
