Got Radeon 9800, slower now
« on: July 29, 2003, 03:46:04 PM »
My system:

ASUS P4T mb
P4 1.5 gig
512 RIMM
Western Digital 160 gig hd
Radeon 9800

my system is was running 60-70 fps with my old GeforceII MX card, now I get less with my Radeon 9800 card???

I have reloaded my OS from scratch, loaded all the motherboard drivers first then the ATI drivers just like they suggest. I have tried reloading AH.

The Radeon drivers are installed, the memory is recognized.

What could be going on here? I don't understand it.

Also, loaded directx 9.0 and Intel aplication accellerator for my board.

Monitor refesh is 100, AH game FR unlimited

do you have AA on? 4x or higher?

I went from a ti4400 to a ati 9800 recently

my fps didnt go up as it was cap by monitor refresh (vsync enbled) but I'm able to run it at 4x AA for a better looking game and the fps stay up when in heavy smoke and furballs

I dont know about aliesing, think it's set to default apllication preference. AGP is detecting 4x and my refresh rate ( NEC FE991 monitor) is 100, yet I get about 21-70 fps now, actually dips slower than with my GeForce Mx.

I've been trying to get it to work for 3 days :(

Any IRQs being shared with the video card?

1.5Ghz?  Is that the Willimette core P4?  If it is, then you are CPU limited.

Also note, the 9800Pro likes to run at high resolutions.  Set it to at least 1280x1024 and turn up the AA to 4X.

Just for reference, my 3Ghz (2.4C overclocked to 3) runs the 9800Pro at about 140FPS when I turn off vsync, with the above combination.

With Vsync on my FPS drops to 60, without Vsync it's been as high as 250fps in open terrain.

Skuzzy will tell you to never disable v sync in AH.

You were right, my cpu was the problem.

I  upgraded my system to a 2.6 Ghz P4, new MB ( both 800MHz FSB)  and  DDR400 ram...

Now my FPS w/o vert. sync is anywhere from 190 and up to 269 that iv'e seem so far :) (with AA@4 in 1024x768 rez)

I turned verticle sync back on though and now the FPS runs at my refresh rate of 100hz 95% of the time and looks smooth.

p.s. I read somewhere that the 800MHz P4's have a problem and don't actually put through 800Mhz, not that I think it matters too much for me.
