Family and Fitness are bad for your health
« on: August 01, 2003, 10:53:54 AM »
So anyhow, when my daughter was born, I found myself running a little short on time, so I decided to take a break from working out, and just concentrate on running. This arangement worked fine for a while, however, I thought I could re-arrange my workout schedule, and have some extra time on Fridays and Sundays so that I clould lift. Well, crunches fell into the "not running" catagory and were eleminated from my workout for about 2.5 months. When I hit the Gym again, I really over did it on the crunches, and my abs were all sorts of pissed off (and my hip flexors too aparently). After resting on Saturday, sunday caught me totally o ff guard. I went to change Ana's Diaper, and I felt a sharp pain in my back! Damnit! So I took it easy that day, and went to a Chiropractor, took tuesday off to lay around the house (a bad move in retrospect) thinking that a little rest is just what I needed.

So anyhow, I go for about two weeks, and I'm not getting any better really, but I'm not getting any worses. Until this week. I woke up at around 6:00 and the baby was crying. Denise (my wife) was in the shower, so I reached over and picked up my little girl, and started walking her around the room to calm her down. At this point, I can REALLY feel my back telling me something, and while I couldn't make out the exact words, I'm pretty sure they were of the 4 letter variety. So I put Ana back in her crib, and laid down on my bed. And stayed there. I was stuck, couldn't get up without severe muscle spasms in my lower back down to my ass.

When it got to the point where I couldn't move my back at ALL, we ended up calling for an Whaaaambulance to take my wussy bellybutton to the hostpital. The best part of it is: I live RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the damn hostpital, but there was no way for me to get out of bed without a ton of assistance. So the Paramedics roll my screaming bellybutton into a sack (take a stretchehr and remove those bothersome boards or poles, and you get theh picture. And here is where I became very surprised.

I'm a very creative cusser. I like to mix and match curse words that others avoid. Like saying "Holy cock" instead of "Holy ****" Or "****-knocker" But when they were carring my down the stairs, I was supplying them with nonthing but the standards. Denise said that whatever I lacked in creativity, I made up for in Volume.

At the hostpital, they loaded me up with drugs, but they didn't have much of an effect at first, but when I tried to stand up (on the Dr's order btw, there was no way I would have thought that was a agood ide) I almost passed out. I got severe tunnel vision, and lost about 95% of my hearing. That scared the **** out of me more than not being able to get out of bed lol.

Anyhow, the inflamation went down, and I was able to walk short distances with a cain, and now I can operate close to normal (although I can't run or walk briskly) but my spine is still all twisted out of shape (hopefully I'll remember to upload the picturue).

So remember, don't work out and ignore your family, these are the keys to a happy life.

And btw on the 10 point scale:
Valume: 7
Flexeril:6
Vikadin:8
Predlisone: N/A
Demerol:2

I've had this problem too, although I was able to loosen up my back enough to drive to the doctor.  He looked at it and concluded it was just muscle spasms.  I find that if I stretch once a day (Google for "lower back stretching") then it will not happen.  But yeah it really hurt the first time it happened, and being unable to stand up straight really sucks.

Stretching is integral to any sport, you dumboscar!  How do you think I'm able to carry my 38-year-old bones down a 15k street circuit?  If you wanted to cut back on working out to tend to family, ditch the weights, keep the running, and add more stretching!

And to think I let you lead me into battle every Friday night in TOD.

By the way, do we have any orders for tonight?

And last I heard, the Turks were marching on beloved Salzburg.

I seem to do this to my back about once every two years.  The last time I did it, I was replacing the shower curtain in our bathroom.  I was reaching up with both hands over my head, and I happened to sneeze.  The sneeze threw my back out and I went straight to the floor.  Trip to the doctor for some muscle relaxants and Celebrex and two weeks later I am fine.

My friends make fun of me because for two weeks afterwards when I walk it looks like I have something stuck up my behind.  I end up purposely walking with a limp so it doesn't look so funny.

I agree with funkedup, daily stretching is key.  Every morning I turn on the tele and watch weather/traffic and stretch on the floor for 10 min.
