Infinite Loop Problems
« on: August 01, 2003, 12:33:39 PM »
I have gotten a Geforcefx 5200 in April for my computer and it worked fine until a few days ago when my computer started flcikerng in and out and then it crashed with this message:

The driver for the display device got stuck in an infinite loop. This
// usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device
// driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your
// display device vendor for any driver updates.

I have bee looking online for a solution and it seem various cards motherboards with Windows XP are having this problem.  I even installed my Geforce2 Ti card and the same thing happened. (Shouldve gotten the ATI_.   Any suggestions?:o

Have you loaded Service Pack 1 for Windows XP?  There was a bug (among thousands of others) in Windows XP which caused this.  Service Pack 1 was supposed to include a fix for this.

Once you've got Service Pack 1 installed, if you still have the problem, go to http://www.nvidia.com and download updated Detonator drivers for your video card.  I believe the newest version is 44.03 right now.

Ill try that!  I just wiped my hdd drive clean before this and downloaded the service pack 1.  hopefully it will work.  I got the new Detonators but they flickered too.  Hopefully this works...If not I will be getting an ATI card.

It's not the card, cause you stated that older ti card did same thing.

If you formatted your machine, make sure right after os install, chipset drivers, directx, then vid drivers in that order.

Most of the time doesnt matter but in that order in the long run causes less headaches.

and as scuzzy says.."go back to the detonator 30.82" it's the most stable det. out...and they shut off some of the features in the new ones for performance, and took away too many nice things. it also works great with a tweaking utility called riva tuner(on g-force 4 mx 440 anyway) but it is the most stable.i've tried every update (lots of work) and always go back. my frames do stay below 90 now but no twitches, glitches or hic-coughs i get from others. good luck:p

Does it happen right away? If so, try running pc w/minimal hw/sw, ie: only 1 stick of ram, vid, kb and mouse,, see what ya get.

Add stuff as you go along watching to see what causes problem.

Before you start, reseat everything.

If yo got other hw, try using them when you get to the problem, (you already tried diff vid), ie: monitor,kb etc...

Pain in the behind I know, but should pinpoint cause.

Good news.

I saw as you mentioned above some forums that suggested you take a stick of RAM away and the problem was gone.  I have three sticks of 256mb RAM (My system description WAS outdated with the Ram and Vid Card).  I took one 256 out and that didnt work.  But This morning I updated my  Bios and then accelerated my card one notch at a time to see if it would act up again.  I have not had any flicking or crashes yet.:)  Now I might put the Ram Stick back in.  If it flickers that means I got a power issue and gonna have to lose the stick.  But if it works I am going to say the bios was screwed.  Hopefully it is the Bios cause my board can hold 3gbs of memory.

Thanks for the help again!

I am still getting a ATI card later  GeforceFX doesnt seem to be the future.
