...regarding my upcoming attempt at 'dedicated strategic air defense'.
To sum up:
I've been playing online flight sims on and off for a few years. While getting into a big fur party and shooting things up can be lots of fun, I'm going to try something different for at least 1 TOD.
I'm going to be flying the Fw 190D-9, Bf 109G-10, Ta 152H, and maybe (perk points permitting) the Me 262A-1.
What my general idea/plan is:
Roll with 100% internal fuel + max. external fuel. Patrol the 'front line' at 25,000'+ altitiude.
Why? So when enemy LLGBs (Level Laser Guided Bombers) start making their rounds, I'll be waiting.
Why should you care? No more climbing for 4 minutes to get an assist on a B-17G as you and 4 other guys climb to kill said B-17G after it's already taken out the fuel or ordinance or FHs at the airfield you are operating from. Stay 'down in the mud' (a relative term for a guy who's looking to spend a TOD with a 15,000' hard deck) and blow up lots of enemy fighters and attack aircraft.
What I need to hear to try this: I need 4, maybe 6 'full time' (you play 3+ nights a week, between 1800 and 0000 EST) Bishops to act as my 'part time' GCIs.
In other words, you are in your P-38L, shooting the hell out of enemy fighters near an enemy airfield. Way off to your left and way above you, you spot a very high altitude enemy level bomber heading for the Beloved Bishop Homeland.
Being one of my much appreciated 'part time' GCIs, you already have 'wulf14' set to one of your radio frequencies and you give me the most accurate position (3 digits, grid # + 'keypad')/altitude/heading report you can.
That's all I really need to hear. It's more of a commitment than most main arena guys have ever had to give...but it's not that tough a commitment overall, no?
Operationally, I'll be patrolling a 4 sector area, about 10 miles deep into enemy airspace. I figure this will give me a ~7 minute average intercept time for any reported contact in a Ta 152H. If the enemy LLGBs are spotted before they get within 10 miles of their target, I should get a good pass in before their initial drop.
Anyone who wants to join me...let me know - I'm looking for 1 good wingman if they are up for the potential periods of boredom until the 'casual GCI' system gets ironed out.
Other notes:
During intercept lulls, I'll be available for high altitude escort work of course.
I'll be up (way, way up) 4 'nights' a week, between 1500 and 0000 EST. I will announce refueling breaks on the Bishop channel. If I encounter a large raid, I will shadow the raid and give intercept vectors to other Bishops (lots of practice doing this type of thing in WB ETO historical events).
What do you Bishops think?
