New VW Golf?
« on: August 04, 2003, 09:07:57 AM »
I wondered if anyone has any info on the introduction of the new (Mk5) VW Golf. It's supposed to arrive here later in the year, which probably means it has already been released in Germany and the US in LHD form...

Anyone have any news or pictures?

Is the Mk 5 the same frame that the next Audi A3 is based on?

Tnx, Pfunk. Not surprisingly, no pictures are available at that website.

Rip - the current Golf is the equivalent of the Audi A3. The picture you posted looks more like the current Audi A2, and sort of like the Merc A-Class.

I guess not ripsnort the golf has always been designed new from zero.

Not a based on like the first model passat.

Althought their frontwheeldrive and watercooling originated from audi. But that's been along while ago.

Still knowlegde is been circulating between the V.A.G. group
wich is Volkswagen, Audi and offcourse Porsche.

Top 3 on my wishlist for cars btw. :)

It's an improvement in the looks department, but I see it gets fatter and more bloated with every generation.

Heh... that would be the reason for the design changes, yes. ;)

Looks like a derivative of the Matrix/Vibe concept.

You can see the family resemblance.  It's like the current one on steroids. I drive an 00 Golf 1.6. I think it looks a bit boxy but it grows on you. It feels very solid indeed and I swear they make it with leftover Panzers. One rearended my brother in law's Nissan. Result: the Nissan was a write off but the Golf had no visible damage at all. None!

A girl in work is selling her 01 Golf Gti. I want it, just have to raise the money somehow.

But I might wait for the new Golf.

Dowding is right in that the Golfs have got bigger, baggier... I always thought the Mk2 had the "classic Golf look". I had a 97 VR6 Mk 3. When I test drove it (it was to have been a demo car) I thought it was good, but never imagined it would be THAT good. When I got the 01 V6, I thought the VR6 was good, but the V6 4x4 was twice as good. Baggier it may be, but even better than what went before.

But now I have to take it to the dealer. :( The driver's window mechanism failed on Sunday...
