More tips:

If you can ride a street bike, get one.  When traffic is bad and twisted, motorcycles will ride between the lanes on the freeway and can get places fast.  I've done it for years (it is legal here), and with proper caution, you can do it without dying.

On food, there are lots of places that you might never eat usually that have great food.  Look for crowds of people.  I live near a taco place literally has lines out the door onto the street, and it's good.  Same with taco vans.

Don't live in the Valley, or inland.  The best place to live (in my opinion) is Culver City/Marina Del Rey/Mar Vista.  Those areas are close to the ocean, far from sewage plants, and reasonably priced (by LA standards).  Santa Monica has great weather, but is expensive.  Torrance has cheap housing, but is a concrete wasteland.  Manhatten Beach is Manhatten Expensive (as in $1600 for 250 square feet, no kidding).  Inglewood is overflown by jets all day (LAX).  Compton is... well documented in the movies.

I'll second that. I lived in Culver City and then in Westchester for 7 years. Used to be a nice area, but I don't think I would go back there now.

Nyet, that was the case 5-10 years ago, but Culver City got rid of them.

No kidding.

I know this because they did it on my street.  They blocked off the ends of a bunch of streets and turned them into 'No Outlet'.

Why does this stop gang activity?  Easy.

** pause **

Imagine, if you will, a gang banger driving his 20 foot convertible caddy down the street.  His passenger stands up, aims his glock, and unloads a clip into a competing gang member.

Now, the cadillac gets to the end of the street.....  How long do you suppose it would take for a big ol' car like that to turn around?  Halfway through his 10 point turn, he's hanging lifeless out the door full of lead.

My neighborhood used to be a big gang neighborhood, but Culver City turned a bunch of streets into traps, so there's no violence and no drug dealing.  Why no drug dealing?  Because the police have got you boxed in!

Those wall traps do help but depending on whats on the other side can also encourage violence. Ive seen gang members hop those walls just to use them as shooting positions. Stack something on the other side stand on it and fire away. But all in all LA is a wonderful place to live..  I cant wait to get out of the Bay Area.

BTW, they aren't walls, they block off the streets with poles to prevent vehicles from going through.

When I was moving from LA to Bayarea (a job of course), I thought that I'm going to go back one day. It was 1989 and I just loved LA, so many things to do, so many things to see. I even kept my house and I've decided to rent it. The biggest mistake of my life. Lost a shirt on it (f*ng unscrupulous lawyers) and even after I said quits, I could not rid of it for a long time. I visited every once in a while and I watched a very nice area spiral into the ground.

I would not go back again, but I really miss the good times and my memories.

As for why I'm going, most would assume I'd got a job at EA, working on Lord of the Rings.  The truth would be that I'm idealisticly inclined to a governer manufactured by machines gone wild, who ruthlessly exterminate the human race.  Sweet!

I'll try to attend the minicon but my beermaking equipment will remain in Texas in the capable hands of a true Hellfire brew believer.  But thusly, the apprenticeship is grueling.

I'm thankful for the advice so far.  But here's my take on the info I've received:

- I will check out the burgers at in-and-out
- I will not use my signal on the highway but will continue to do so on the side streets
- I will endeavor to enlighten Californians on a Hayden-esque approach to social programs, rather than the current Keynsian approach
- I will, though my example, force them to accept a cowboy mentality as more viable than spiritually deprived facile personnal blinder approach.  They are weak and must, via a Thoreau 'majority-of-one' conform.
- I will get a bike asap. But since my Harley was stolen only a few months ago, it will only be viable in the context of perfect safety.

Give me more: what is the sales tax?  how heavy a burden is the state income tax? how much is a carton of American Spirit Ligths?

Thanks, gentlemen, this _is_ very helpful

move inland like corona norco (norco for you my friend already has ton of people from texas you can wear your cowboy hat with being called crazy same with boot's) area and get a job that is EAST  from your house that way you wont have to deal with as munch traffic. in Norco instead of sidewalk's they have horse trails and almost everyone who live's out here is a cowboy and stuff like that. Even have shooting range block from my house :D (or was it less than i block cant remeber) ohh yes btw that river santa ana river has very nice horse trail. inland is fine except for the heat.
