i saw this film last night, and i really liked it.  I have been thinking of buying the game for a while, anyone have it that could tell me a bit about it please and whether its worth buying?
I am not ashamed to confess that I am ignorant of what I do not know.

I think somebody posted up a review of the game back when the film first came out in the US a few weeks back.  I seem to recall that it got pretty good marks.

It's basically "Sea Dogs 2" with the movie license thrown in at the latest states of development.

Excellent graphics (the sea battles are incredible), poor control and a steep learning curve.

I had fun for a while and come back every once in a while to it for a sea battle or two if I'm in the mood.

The thing that I can't stand is that they didn't model the sails right... is it THAT difficult to make them change with the wind?

Off to see Pirates tonight.

We are soooooo far behind on movies it is silly.

Sails right? not sure what you mean Cyrano?  I think the sails do turn into the wind at least somewhat.

They had to axe alot of stuff planned when DIsney stepped in, its a shame, but its a fun game at least.  Mods are also on the way as well.

went to see the movie yesterday (first movie since April   ) It was fun. According to my wife, several of the scenes in the movie were straight out of the ride.

What? You haven't been on the POTC ride?

FWIW, I thought the ride was better before they decided to make it "politically correct".

They flutter, they sometimes move, but definitely not in relation with the direction of the wind (and yes, I'm playing in simulation mode).

Call me nitpicky, but since everything else is so superbly done (talking strictly sea battles) graphically, it really puts me down.

It was great for making out. I wasn't aware there was going to be a quiz later :)

I know they look pretty and all.. but

Combat.. well the game is tuned for the arcade sailing mode, I like Cyrano, started out using the realistic sailing mode...   You will be EXTREMELY lucky if you can even get a third of the way through the main quest using realistic.
It also sucks that masts never drop...

Realistic...  ever seen a sailboat sail directly into the wind before?

Best tactics:  go for the boarding!!  best way to make money in the game.  Be sure to check ALL the chests and sacks on ALL the ship decks when you board a ship.
Once you have a ship such as a schooner you can start doing trade runs for the merchants which pay well based on how much cargo space you and your squadron have available.

Squad mates..  remove all the bombs, knippels, and grape off any other ships in your squadron besides your own.  If the ship has bombs its all he will use, and there have been cases where I stepped back onto my boat after capturing a ship, only to have my squad mate sink it with his last volley.  Unless you wanna use your squadmates as decoys send em away anytime you get into a fight.

Best abilities...  I always start with the trading abilities, and as soon as you can get the Trustworthy Fellow ability.  It will enable you to trade in contraband safely, and make a ton of money (however your reputation will drop as a result)

Best skills...  commerce, accuracy, cannons, leadership, boarding in that order IMO.  Melee... as you upgrade this skill the game just scales the difficulty of the melee fights...  I hardly see the point.

Just some tips +)
